Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
celebrates its 70th birthday this
year, but it will give birthday
gifts to the nation rather than
receive them.
These gifts will be in the form
of “gifts of action” projects
centered on the theme of water
and tying in with the United Na-
tions’ declaration of 1981-1990
as the Clean Water Decade.
A task force from the Pioneer
Girl Scout Council - Gaston,
Lincoln, Cleveland and Ruther-
ford counties - choose these pro-
jects for 1982:
*Water safety - Scouts will
organize ‘‘drown-proofing”’
clinics during the early summer
months to encourage safe enjoy-
ment of water sports. The clinics
will be held at public pools and
will be open to Girl Scouts and .
others who do not know how to
swim.
*Water conservation - Scouts
will plan how they and their
families can conserve water by
finding out exactly how much
water they use and how much
they could save. This project will
climax with a day when they use
no water.
*Water cleanup - Scouts will
remove trash from streams and
place trash containers in the area
to decrease water pollution. In
cooperation with the Soil and
Water Conservation Service,
Scouts also will plant seeds,
bushes and trees along banks to
reduce erosion.
