Left to right are McGill Participates In Presidential Classroom Charles Hamilton McGill of Kings Mountain High School is participating this week in A Presidential Classroom for Young Americans in Washington, D.C. The Classroom will have 432 outstanding high school students from all 50 states plus schools overseas represented in the Na- tional Student Body. Presidential Classroom is an educational program for juniors and seniors in high school which introduces student leaders to the people who make and influence the policies of the federal govern- ment. The Classroom presentsan overview of ‘Power in Washington” through the students meeting with decision makers from the three branches of government, the diplomatic community, the news media, and the business and labor sec- tors. This week, the students will meet with many policy makers, including Senator Edward F. Kennedy (Massachusetts); The ‘high A AP RP PSP QP PPP SP SP rp Qo SP SF RP = Honorable Rudolph W. Giuliani, Associate Attorney General of the United States; Marsha Michele McGraw, Associate Director, Arms Con- trol Association; Congressman Louis Stokes (Ohio); and General William C. Westmoreland, U.S. Army (Retired). Students ‘will also have appointments with their elected Members of Con- gress and attend committee hear- ings on Capitol Hill. . The Classroom was chartered in 1968 at the recommendation of President Lyndon B. Johnson. The program promotes citizen responsibility and civic awareness through a forum for independent thought. Since the program receives no government funding, students depend on rais- ing their tuition from local civic groups and their schools. Students are selected by their schools to attend the Classroom. - In addition to the program for school students, the Classroom offers a program for college students and profes- Proclamation WHEREAS, more than 2 million North Carolinians are ag- ed 40 and older, and nearly 1.5 million are working or seeking .. work; and WHEREAS, these middle- aged and older workers bring ex- tensive experience and high job qualifications to the work force of the State and are steady, reliable workers; and WHEREAS, the Federal Government and the State of North Carolina identify employ- ment of middle-aged and older workers as a priority in attaining maximum productivity of the labor force; and WHEREAS, in pursuing this goal, the President and Gover- nor James B. Hunt, Jr., have designated the week of March 1420 as Employ the Older Worker Week; and WHEREAS, As Mayor of the City of Kings Mountain, I ac- tively endorse this opportunity to focus public attention on the problems of older workers, and Stamp collectors are known as philatelists. The name comes from two Greek words, philos, meaning lov- ing, and atelos, meaning free of tax or paid. Stamps are signs that the postage, or tax, has been paid.
