It was a town full of people of all different na- tionalities.” Starr revealed that during a: long deployment there are a few things he misses the most. “It’s the little things that you miss,” Starr noted. “The Sunday drives in the countryside, a plea- sant walk through the woods and, of course, women friends.” Starr’s plans are to continue in : the Navy as a career. He hopes to attend the Navy. Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., for completion of a master’s degree in political science. The North Carolina resident said that his Navy experience . has been a personal enrichment. “On a cruise you get to meet people of different nationalities. Y ou soon realize that people are the same wherever you are and have the same basic goals. “The Navy gives you a chance to see the world firsthand,” he continued. “With a background in political science, I'm getting a hands-on’ experience in world af- fairs through my Navy duty. You can’t beat it.” Lori Ann Hughes Notes 6th Birthday Lori Ann Hughes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Hughes of the Dixon Community, celebrated her sixth birthday March 11. A party was given Saturday at McDonald’s. Hamburgers were served with all the trimmings, and Lori and her guests also en- joyed a McDonald’s cake and ice cream, : Attending the party were Christie and Heather Hughes, Leigh Anne and Dee Stewart, Christie and Suzie Rogers, Jen- nifer Hmphries, Mary and Terrie Huffman, Tim Payne, Becky and Tiffany Brackett, Kenneth Allen, Patty Hughes, and Lori Ann’s grandparents. Lori Ann is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen and Mrs. Annette Hughes and the late Gordon Hughes, all of Clint Is One Clint Hardin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hardin of Kings Mountain, celebrated his first birthday March 29. A party was 28. Attending were friends Joy Dixon and Glenn Carroll, and other friends and relatives. The guests enjoyed a “Birthday Train” party with cake, ice cream and cokes. Co- Chairmen for this year’s event were Rita Ferguson and Joanie Nolen. . The welcome was given by Jerry Weeks, P.T.O. President. Steve Baker, local teacher, was Master of Ceremonies. Judges were Sherry Hamrick, Gale Black, and Kay Stewart. Christa Calhoun and Heather Calhoun, representatives from Kate’s Skating Rink of Gastonia, - provided the Special Entertain- ment. Bill Calhoun, their father, explained how roller skating has changed over the years and described the different routines done in competition. Winners from Division I were Tee Gee Goforth and Matt Shockley doing their edition of the “Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard”. Michelle Kaylor cap- tured the win from Division II, singing the “Tree Song”. Divi- sion III winner was Eric Ross with an harmonica solo of “Home Sweet Home”. These ERIC ROSS winners. will represent West School in the annual Kiwanis Club Talent Show on April 29. Other participants in Division I were Jada Brown, Heather Ellis, Jody Putnam, Boutsaa Sourisoud, and Jason Brown. Division II participants included Jill Sluss, Holly Smith, Kia Miller, Frazier White, Jeffery Melton, Pam Craig, Andrew 3 Fulton, and Tina Nicholson. Other Division II participants were Michelle Crawford, Rebec- ca Whetstine, Kimberly Dewberry, Michelle Timms, Wendy Bridges, Michael Green, Danny Freeman, Charlene Crawford, Page Wells, Gayla] Jones, Jenny Wood, Lori: Blalock, Shannon Smith, and, Tammy Cook.
