Julia Ruff ‘Is Promoted
Julie A. Ruff, daughter of Ora
B. Berrier of 1600 Parkview Cir-
cle, Kings Mountain, has been
promoted to the U.S. Air Force
to the rank of staff sergeant.
Ruff is a vehicle operator and
dispatcher at Kirtland Air Force
Base, N.:M., with the 1606th
Transportation Squadron.
Her grandfather, Edd Powell,
is a resident of Tuckasegee, N.C.
.She is a 1976 graduate of
Kings Mountain Senior High
School.
Secondary Learning
Disabilities, an exceptional
children’s program at Central
School, Kings Mountain Junior
High School, and Kings Moun-
tain Senior High School, has
been selected as an exemplary
exceptional children’s program
in the southeast by the Council
of Administrators of Special
Education. Nominated by the
State Department of Public In-
struction, Division for Excep-
tional Children, the local pro-
gram competed with 50 other
programs nominated. Of the
nominees, eight programs were
_ selected to represent the interests
of special education personnel in
the targeted area.
As a result of the selection, ex-
ceptional children’s personnel
from Kings Mountain District
Schools will be involved in train-
ing to improve the presentation
of the program and also in ac-
. tivities to disseminate the pro-
gram to possible adapters at na-
tional and regional conferences.
The Secondary Learning
Disabilities Program in Kings
Mountain emphasizes instruc-
tional training, teacher training,
student training, and assessment
skills to assist students with lear-
ning disabilities in grades 6-12.

ing teachers to work with learn-
ing disabled students, organizing
a peer tutoring program at the
high school, providing ap-
propriate materials for students,
monitoring students in all classes
‘to help prevent failure and to
emphasize success in school and
assisting students with skills to
help them pass the North
Carolina Competency Test.
According to Jane Shields,
Coordinator of the Kings Moun-
tain Exceptional Children’s Pro-
gram, “administrative support
for the program and competent
staff have greatly enhanced ser-
vices to the learning disabled
students.”
Two Appointed
The Great Dominion Cor-
poration has announced the ap-
pointment of two new corporate
officers.
Major General Billy J. Ellis
‘has been appointed as Executive
Vice President with specific
responsibility for marketing and
business development. General
Ellis recently completed more
than 30 years in the Air Force.
He is a graduate of the U.S.
Military Academy, West Point,
and earned a Master of Science
in Business Administration from
the George Washington Univer-
