Kimberly McGinnis, Greg Conner Fourteen Urge Rejection Of Telecommunication Bill Fourteen noted, economists- including a Nobel Prize winner- have joined the opposition to passage of H.R. 5158, the pro- posed Telecommunications Act of 1982. T.M. Graham, District Manager of Southern Bell here, said the economists have con- cluded that the telecommunica- tions bill currently under con- sideration in the U.S. House of Representatives should be re- jected because of its harmful ef- forts on the nation’s economy, the nation’s position in world trade and the Bell System. Southern Bell and other operating companies of AT&T are seeking defeat of H.R. 5158, Graham said. Dr. Lester C. Thurow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said the bill needs to be rewritten as a bill “designed to strengthen America’s ability to . compete rather than existing as a bill to handicap the Bell System so that ‘fair’ domestic competi- ‘Buy Carrier Central Air Conditioning Now, Get $100 Factory Rebate! He is also the author of several books, in- cluding the Zero-Sum Society. In his analysis of H.R.5158, Dr. Thurow cautions that the “United States is now trailing in a world-wide competitive technological race.” Dr. Thurow believes that the telecommunica- tions industry is “one of the few industries where we still have a competitive edge vis-a-vis the rest of the world,” and he urges that we not “throw it away under the guise of handicapping the dominate competitor.” Dr. Thurow notes that major foreign manufacturers now stand poised to “invade the American Telecommunications Market.” This means that we must preserve the viability of Bell Labs and the rest of the Bell System. We cannot treat it as an American-funded international laboratory that is going to give away all of its inventions and in- formation to domestic and foreign competition alike. The information generated at the Bell Labs has to be used in a pro- prietary way or it will be used not to strengthen domestic com- petition but. to destroy the domestic industry just as the consumer electronics industry has been destroyed in the United States,” he said. Dr. Thurow concludes that H.R. 5158 “needs to be re- examined and recast as a bill designed to strengthen America’s ability to compete rather than existing as a bill to handicap the Bell System” because “if the Bell system i$ handicapped so that it cannot compete, the industry is going to be dominated by large in- tegrated, probably Japanese, foreign firms.” Picnic Set The Cleveland County Chapter of North Carolina Retired School Personnel will Marine Sgt.
