The new feature called Calling Card Service is designed to make operator assisted calling easier, faster and less expensive for customers who prefer not to make regular, direct-dialed calls. T.M. Graham, company spokesman in Kings Mountain, said that many customers, especially tourists and business travelers prefer to make telephone calls that require operator assistance. Ro A CL ANE 0 SF ASS TS Us DT CS SAO IR graduated from Johnson C. Smith University recently. Debra Eyvonne Howell, Route 3, Kings Mountain, graduated cum laude and receiv- ed her bachelor of science degree. Ms. Howell completed her requirments for graduation in December. Johnson C. Smith is a four- year, private, liberal arts univer- sity founded in 1867. have telephone company calling cards--formerly called credit cards—can make calling card calls from any telephone, public or private, equipped for Touch Tone dialing. “All functions that an operator would normally handle like validating calling card numbers and recording of billing information will all be handled by CCS computers in Greensboro and Raleigh,” Graham said. A customer making a call from a public telephone would dial zero and the number they wish to reach. After the number is dialed they will hear a distinc- tive tone followed by a recording asking them to key in the calling card number. : Customers who call from a residence or business phone will only hear the distinctive tone. After the calling card number is keyed in, the CCS computer will almost instantaneously validate ..the .number through: another ‘computer located in Oklahoma City. If the calling card number is valid, the customer’s call will then be: allowed to proceed. Customers who = experience difficulty in making an automated call can reach an operator for assistance simply by pressing the Zero button after the tone or recorded announce- ment. Also, an operator will automatically come on the line to assist if the customer does not key in a calling card number or zero within five seconds after the tone or announcement. “We believe Calling Card Ser- vice will benefit customers in significant ways,” Graham said. “First of all it will make calling faster since call processing is almost instantaneous. Billing will also be improved since the possibility of human error is reduced considerably. “The major advantage will be the cost of calling. In North Carolina, the lower cost of handling calling card calls is reflected in lower operator- assistance charges for in-state calls—=30 cents for customer- dialed calling card calls com- pared to 70 cents for collect or other station calls and $1.70 for person to person calls.” Reduced operator-assistance charges are also in effect for call- ing card calls made to points out- side North Carolina. Graham said that Southern Bell and rate payers in general will benefit from CCS since such state-of-the-art technology helps to stem the rising cost of pro- viding telecommunications ser- vices through increased produc- tivity and lower operating costs. According to Graham, CCS is the latest step in Southern Bell’s efforts to improve operator ser- vices in North Carolina begun in August, 1971 when its com- puterized, all-electronic Traffic Service Position System was first introduced in Raleigh. Plans call for CCS to be made available in all of Southern Bell’s North Carolina’ service area by the end of June. Graham said that customers who have rotary dial telephones will not have access to the automated CCS. However, they will still be able to use their call- ing card numbers for customer- dialed, operator assisted calls and will be billed at the lower calling card rate. i TR a Opn EE RY ey RIE MI REE
