Band to play at National Park...
Park Programs Slated
Evening programs will con-
tinue this weekend, July 9 and
10, at the Kings Mountain Na-
tional Military Park.
On Friday, July 9 at 7:30
p.m., the park will host a special
musical event in the park am-
phitheatre. Featured will be the
award winning 440th Army
Band of the North Carolina Na-
tional Guard. The Raleigh based
band will entertain the audience
with a wide selection of musical
numbers including top forty,
Dixieland, pop, Beach, Country,
and patriotic music.
The 440th was distinguished
in July of 1978 by being the first
National Guard Band to be nam-
ed as the Official Military Band
for the United States Military
Academy at West Point. The
band has been named the
outstanding National Guard
Unit five times since 1947.
The 48 piece band is under the
direction of Warrent Officer
Michael C. Stephens who has
commanded the band in perfor-
mances around the nation since
1977. The musicians represent
many vocational and profes-
sional activities. They are bound
together with a common bond of
service to their state and nation
through their musical talents and
abilities.
The 440th Army Band has a
proud hertiage which extends
back to the American Revolu-
tion. It is known, for example,
that fifes and drums were used in
the Revolutionary War. They
appear in sketches of battles
throughout the war. During the
Civil War, bugles were added.
Early in the 20th century, the
three North Carolina Militia
Regiments formed bands and
these served on the Mexican
border in 1916. These regiments
were combined with others from
Georgia, South Carolina, and
Tennessee to form the famous
30th Infantry Divison which
served with distinction in
Europe during both World
Wars. During that time the band
performed for such dignitaries as
President Roosevelt, Prime
Minister Churchill, Field Mar-
shal Montgomery, General
Eisenhower, and Lord Mount-
batten, and others.
The band became the 30th In-
fantry Division and served with
the “Old Hickory” Division in
England, France, Belgium,
Holland, and Germany. After
the war it was redesignated as
the 94th Army band and again
stationed in -Raleigh, but it was
soon changed again to the 30th
Infantry Division Band. It re-
mained under this designation
until the 30th Division was deac-
tivated in 1973. At that time it
received the present designation
of 440th Army Band, which was

The last bloodmobile of the
fiscal year for Cleveland County
was held in Kings Mountain on
Wednesday, June 30, with a goal
of 150. A total of 159 donors
came to the bloodmobile, 19
were deferred with a productive
total of 140 pints sent to the
Blood Center in Charlotte. Ten
pints were given from first-time
donors.
The visit was sponsored by the
Mountaineer Booster Club with
other local civic clubs asked to
participate. The Kings Mountain
Jaycees, Woman’s Club, Rotary,
Kiwanis, Optimist, Sertoma and
Lion’s were asked to help in
recruiting donors, loading and
unloading the bloodmobile
equipment or working as
volunteers.
The 140 pints from the Kings
Mountain visit brought the June
total for all bloodmobiles in the
county to a total of 427 pints for
the month on a goal of 484 or a
deficit of 67 pints. July,
November, and June all ended
short of a goal but the blood pro-
gram for the year was the most
successful in Cleveland County’s
history. Not only was the yearly
goal of 5800 pints reached but
the total was 6244 or 44 units of
blood over goal. 1,124 of these
were first time donors. Martha
Scruggs, Program Director of
the American Red Cross
Cleveland County Chapter,
stated, “The outstanding success
of the blood program this year
has been due to the hard work
and dedication of the many
donors, volunteers, and sponsors
in Cleveland County. The ex-
cellent coverage by the
newspapers and radio stations
helped to make the citizens of
this country aware of the need of
blood to meet the hospital orders
and they responded. Anticipated
hospital orders for the coming
year are expected to exceed the
amount now booked on the new
schedule by more than 11 per-
cent so we have our work cut
out for us again. The 444 pints
we added in were used to fill
hospital orders that in some
months were 24 percent higher
than in the same month the year
before.”

donors who give 4, 5, or 6 times
during a 12 month period, began
in Kings Mountain with the
June 30 bloodmobile and on Ju-
ly 1 for the remainder of the
county. When a donor reaches
his fourth donation this fiscal
year he will become a VIP donor
and receive a special VIP blood
card from the Center in
Charlotte. All 140 Kings Moun-
tain donors who wish to become
a VIP will receive their VIP card
upon completion of the. fourth
donation during the 12 months
period from June 30, 1982, to
June 30, 1983.
Included in the VIP program
will be the special “O” club for
those donors who have blood
type O Positive and O Negative.
The O type blood can be
transfused to patients with other
blood types without negative
reactions. This creates a greater
usage of this blood type than any
other. The O Negative is often
used for Ped packs for premature
babies and is divided into four
smaller amounts per transfusion
as they do not usually need the
same amount as an adult. All
blood types are needed at local
bloodmobiles on a regular
balanced basis.
