l i | | Reni Be Ee ne a a ee Bryan Jones Has Good Showing In Southern Eleven-year-old Bryan Jones of Kings Mountain had a good showing in the Southern Junior Tennis Tournament held last week in Columbia, S.C. The Central School student and son of Bob and Barbara Jones finished in the top 32 in singles competition and advanc- ed to the quarter-finals of doubles before losing to the top- seeded team of Darren Royal and Todd Smith of Tennessee. Jones and his doubles partner, Victor Meir of Raleigh, knocked off the tournament’s sixth- seeded team before losing to Royal and Smith. They opened tournament ac- tion with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Richard Flores of Josh Bronson of Shreveport, La. Ironically, Shreveport is the home town of Jones’ grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Tobias. Jones and Meir then defeated Hernando Moreno of Alabama and Brian Berrigan of South Carolina, 7-5, 7-5, and then knocked off sixth-seeded Bill Cherry and Frank Drowota of Tennessee 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to ad- vance to the quarter-finals BRYAN JONES against Royal and Smith. The tournament’s top-seeded duo scored an impressive 6-0 vic- tory in the first set, but Jones and Meir battled back to win the second set 6-4. The two teams battled tough in the final set, with Royal and smith taking a 6-3 win. Royal is the top-ranked 12-year-old player in Tennessee and Smith is ranked second. Jones, seeded sixth from North Carolina, got an opening round bye in singles competition, and then scored an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over seventh-seeded Lance Cox of Arkansas. In third round action, he lost to South Carolina’s top-seed, Charles Lee, 6-3, 6-0. In consolation |play, he defeated Alabama’s fourth-seed, Chris McCullar 3-6: 6-3, 6-3, before losing to North Carolina’s third-seed, Scott Fligel of Charlotte, 6-1, 64. Over 100 players were entered in singles competition. Players from the two Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi competed in the event. Jones and Meir warmed up for the Southern by A the Piedmont Invitational two weeks ago in Lexington. They defeated top-seeded Murali Bashyam | lof Raleigh and Thad Langford of Lexington in the finals, 6-3, 7-5.
