Match Play Golf Tournament Held Kings Mtn. Country Club An- nual Match Play Championships were held on the weekends of August 7-8 and 14-15. This years tournament proved to have * some of the best matches in re- cent years. The Championship flight final match was between Stoney Jackson and John Gam- ble. Stoney reached the finals by. winning his second and third round matches after a lye in the first round. John reached the. finals by winning his first, se- cond and third round matches. The final was a close match with both players going after the title. In the end it was Stoney Jackson’ defending his Match Play Title by defeating John Gamble 3 down with 2 holes to play. The First Flight winner was Rogan Harper defeating Mike McDaniel, 3 down with 2 holes PHILIP ELAM Civitans Honor Elam Philip R. Elam of Mars Hill, formerly of Kings Mountain, president of the Asheville Civitan Club 1981-82, was honored in Montreal, Canada at the Civitan International Con- vention held recently. Elam was named as distinguished President and the Asheville Civitan Club was nam- ed “Honor Club” for its service ‘to the community, issues, oppor- tunities, excellence in club management and club fellowship. ; Only two such clubs were awarded the “Honor Club” status in Civitan International. The Asheville Club has the distinction of being the largest club in the world. ‘Elam for 15 years has been Manager of the Economic Development Department of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. He has made a con- siderable contribution to Madison County progress. While County agent in Madison County in the late 1930’s, he organized the French Broad Electric Membership Corpora- tion, appointed the first board of directors, most of whom served for life. While a real estate developer in the early 1960s he amassed the Bald Mountain pro- perties and developed the Wolf Laurel Corporation. He manag- ed this enterprise for several years, which today adds approx- imately nine million dollars to the Madison County Tax Base. Elam played a primary role in br- inging the following industries to Madison County, Micro Switch, Blue Ridge Shoe Company, Mar- shall Glove Company, and American Greetings Corpora- tion. Both players lost their opening round matches, but .came on strong in the First Flight with Hayes coming out the winner. In the Second Flight action it was Houston Wolfe and Louis Cook in the final match. Both players won their semi-final mat- ches one up. In the final match again it was a one up victory for Louis Cook over Houston Wolfe. Third Flight action in the final match was played between Gene Timms and John Harry. Both played regrouped after opening round losses to meet in the finals. In the end it was Gene Timms winning the match 5 up with 4 holes to play over John Harry. Congratulations to all the win- ners of the tournament and thanks to the players. The next event will be the club champion- ship, Sept. 4, 5 and 6. Johnson Finishes Training Navy Seaman Recruit Rafay L. Johnson, son of Ralph L. and Flossie M. Johnson of Route 5, Kings Mountain, N.C., has com- pleted recruit training at the Naval Training Center, Orlando, Fla. During the eight-week train- ing cycle, trainees studied general military subjects design- ed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy’s 85 basic oc- cupational fields. Included in their studies were seamanship, close order drill, Naval history and first aid. Per- sonnel who completed this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in Physical Education and Hygiene.
