Patriots, West Fight To 20-20 Overtime Tie Kings Mountain and West McDowell junior highs fought to a 20-20 overtime tie in the open- ing football game of the season last Thursday in Marion. The Kings Mountain team . stays on the road this week with a non-conference game at West Lincoln. Kings Mountain battled back twice during regulation to tie the game. After a scoreless first over- time, the Patriots scored in the second overtime on a one-yard run by quarterback Roderick Boyce, but their attempted run for a two-point conversion fail- ed. West McDowell came back to score on a three-yard run and Kings Mountain’s defense stop- ped their running attempt for a two-point conversion. West took a 6-0 lead in the first period. -Kings Mountain came back to tie it at 66 at halftime on a 45-yard touchdown run by Otis Brooks. West regained the lead late in the third quarter, 14-6. Kings Mountain scored late in the fourth period on a two-yard run by Boyce and Brooks ran a two- point conversion to force the overtime. Boyce’s touchdown was set up by a 30-yard pass reception by Aubrey Hollifield. Kings Mountain gained 146 yards rushing with Brooks get- ting 79 and Vince Sullens 56. Boyce hit six of 13 passes for 124 yards. Sidney Brown caught two passes for 54 yards and Travis Crocker caught three for 40 yards. Coach David Heffner cited Andre Byers, Brooks, Sullens, Robert Huggins, Donald Mauney and Calvin Stephens for their defensive effort. “Our offensive line looked as good as any line we’ve ever had,’ Heffner said. “We still have a lot of work to do on defense.” Jayvees Lose 26-22, Host Huss Kings Mountain High’s jayvees, coming off two straight narrow losses, host Hunter Huss Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in their first home game. The Little Mountaineers fell to Ashbrook 26-22 last Thurs- day night. The Green Wave came from behind with two touchdowns in the second half to win. Kings Mountain took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter when Lavar Curry ran a 30-yard touchdown and also scored a two-point conversion. Ashbrook came back to go ahead 14-8 at halftime, but KMHS took a 22-14 lead in the third period on a 60-yard TD run by Curry and a 40-yard TD run and two-point conversion. by Mike Grier. : After Ashbrook welt ahead 26-22, the Mounties drove to the Wave 20 with 2:00 to 80 but fumbled.
