Kings Mountain High’s girls tennis team will battle Shelby Thursday at Shelby for the Southwestern 3-A Conference championship. But Coach Ed Guy and the Mountainettes are hoping this year there will be a different en- ding. ‘The Mountainettes and Shelby both go into the match with 70 SWC records. Kings Mountain is 11-0 overall. With only one match remaining Mon- day against Chase, it appears on- ly Shelby stands between the Mountainettes and their first perfect season and first SWC championship. Only Shelby. Jumping that hurdle won’t be easy. The Lady Lions have never lost a Southwestern 3-A Con- ference match. The Mountainet- tes have come close several times, but never closer than a 54 defeat. The Mountainettes tuned up for the meeting with victories Monday and Tuesday over East Rutherford and Burns, respec- tively. “All of our girls played well in those two matches,” said Coach Guy. “I'm really hoping they’ll be at their best Thursday at Shelby.” Thursday’s meeting will not only determine the SWC cham- pion but will determine many of the top seeds for next week’s Sec- tional Tournament at Shelby. That event, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, will bring together 18 schools from this area. The top finishers in the Sec- tional Tournament will advance to the Regionals the following week in Hickory, and the top players there will go on to the State Tournament November 10-11 in Chapel Hill.
