The Shelby girls claimed a 54 victory over the Mountainettes for the second straight year and handed the Mountainettes of Coach Ed Guy their first defeat. The two teams split the six singles matches. Shelby claimed a victory in the number one doubles match to go ahead 4-3 but Kings Mountain came right back and won the number three doubles match to tie at 44. The second doubles match between Pat Davis and Leigh Anne Odell of the Mountainet- tes and Lucy Spragins and Crista Branton of Shelby went three sets before Shelby won a tie- breaker for the victory. Odell and Davis started off in high gear, claiming a 6-0 victory in the first set. The Shelby duo took the deciding set 7-6. “We were within a hair of winning and just didn’t pull it off,” said Coach Guy. “But all of our girls played well and should be congratulated for their fine season. This is the best season we’ve ever had and this is the best team we’ve ever had. “All of my girls did a fine job,” he continued, “but I’m especially proud of my two sophomores who did an excellent job all year long. Robin Warlick has an 11-1 record and Leigh Anne Odell is 12-0.” The Kings Mountain girls, even though theyglast the can. Point KM’s Terrence Blalock On Greensboro Roster Terrence Blalock, a 6-4 freshman forward from Kings Mountain, is a member of the Greensboro College basketball team, which opens its season November 26 in the Washington & Lee Tipoff Tournament. With three freshmen gone from last year’s squad, third-year had coach Ron Mikel is looking to Blalock and other recruits to take up the slack. The Hornets are playing a rug- ged schedule. After the Washington & Lee Tourney in Lexington, Va., the Hornets will compete in the Kiwanis Classic at the Greensboro Coliseum December 14, and the Quaker Classic at Guilford College December 17-18. Regular season tests are against such powers as North Carolina Wesleyan, Presbyterian, Virginia Wesleyan, St. Andrews, Elon and UNC-Greensboro. Virginia Wesleyan is nationally ranked and St. Andrews, the defending conference champion, had a 27-3 record last year and was ranked number one in the nation enter- ing the post-season tournaments. Coach Mikels believes his cur- rent squad has the best talent of any team he’s ever coached, noting that the team has great speed and exceptional depth. But he admits to one major weakness. “The inability to land a strong inside player will hurt us,” he said. ; Blalock, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Blalock of Kings Moun- tain, was a three-year starter at Kings Mountain High School and helped lead the Moun- taineers to two straight Southwestern 3-A Confernce titles. He was All-Conference and led the team in scoring his senior year. MALL Phone (704) 484-2001
