The name Sertoma is a contraction of the words, SERvice TO MAnkind. : The Sertoma Club exists for the high and noble purpose of benefiting mankind at large. Lynn Wellborn, president of the local Sertoma Club; disclosed some interesting facts to our committee at a recent meeting. One such infor- "mative fact: Communicative disorders constitute our nation’s number ‘one handicapping disability. Studies indicate that more people suffer _ “from speech-language-hearing impairments than from heart disease, paralysis, epilepsy, blindness, tuberculosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis combined. As one of their projects, the local Sertoma Club is asking for any hearing aid devices no longer in use or needed by their owners. They hope to obtain enough reparable aids for refurbishing and later issue them to the needy. If you hae one you will donate, call Mr. Wellborn evenings at home, 739-3325, or call us at 739-5938. This is a beautiful, worthwhile project to help those in our community and deserves your support. : kkk In view of the recent Tylenol murders, fears are well-warranted that children could be given poisoned goodies while making their Hallo- ween trick or treating rounds. These safety tips could make the idf- ference between their receiving a treat or a vile, harmful, maybe dead- ly trick. Ap 1 - Firmly warn you children NOT TO EAT from their treat bag un- til it has been inspected at home by one of the parents. Look for damaged wrappers, unusual odor or other signs of tampering. 2 - Give and accept only wrapped or packaged candy. 3 - Visit only familiar homes or neighborhoods. 4 - Wear light-colored clothing or trick-treat during daylight. 5 - Don’t send or allow young children out without an adult. 6 - Don’t assume fruit is safe. They could contain poison, razor blades or pins. 7 - The best attitude is to assume nothing is safe until examined by a competent adult. : 8 - The safest method for the little goblins is to provide home parties, community center activities or attend one of the many churches hav- ing Halloween festivities. ~~ Remember, they are your children. It’s your responsibility to pro- vide them with the proper safety precautions and supervision whether they like it or not. It’s not worth a lifetime of grief and regret for one evening of reckless or disastrous fun. Will you be safe or sorry? Community Partnership Committee, P.O. Box 21.
