cy Induction Ceremony Held The fall induction ceremony for the Gaston College Chapter of Gamma Beta Phi was held Sunday, November 14. Sandra Lawter, chapter president, open- ed the program with a warm welcome to the initiates, their families and friends.’ Thirty-one students were recognized for their outstanding scholastic achievement and ac- cepted for membership. Nixon, Program Set December will be a month for decorations and Christmas stories at the Cleveland County Library. Mrs. Ruth Young will again decorate the community room for groups meeting during the holiday season. The Garden Council will decorate a tree in our picture window and hang a great wreath outside to welcome all to our Christmas activities. Preschoolers are invited to a thirty minute program entitled “Camels, Candles and Candy Canes” on either Monday the 13th, Tuesday the 14th or Wednesday the 15th at 10:00 a.m. A similar program for children ages three to twelve will be presented at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday the 14th. Storyteller, Nancy Brackett will give a pro- gram on December 20th form 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Belwood Center. All during the month of December, children are invited to visit the library’s Gingerbread House and listen to holiday tales taped by the childrens staff. ‘Cadet Ruley Is Honored CHARLOTTE—Cadet Staff Sgt. Robert M. Ruley, son of Charles L. Ruley, 704 York Road, Kings Moutnaiun, and Judith B. Ruley, 3116 Connec- ticut Ave., Charlotte, was recently honored at the Army R.O.T.C. fall awards ceremony at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Ruley, 21, received the Reserve Officers Association Award, the Raiders Membership Award, the Academic Achieve- ment Award, and the Simultaneous Membership Pro- gram ‘Award. Ruley is enrolled in R.O.T.C. at UNCC. In Texas Airman James B. Hodge, son of William J. Hodge of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Brenda F. Koonce of 604 E. Iowa Ave., Bessemer City, has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who com- plete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree in ap- plied science through the Com- munity of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instruction in the civil engineering field. Hodge is a 1981 graduate of Bessemer City High School. Graduates ~ Airman Raymond C. Bullard, son of Raymond T. and Annie M. Bullard of 815 Third St., Kings Mountain, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force person- nel specialist course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. Forty friends and relatives at- tended, including Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carpenter, parents of the bride-to-be, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hamrick Jr. of Kings Mountain. On Sun., Nov. 21, the couple was honored at a brunch, given by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hinton and daughter, Nancy, and Mr.and Mrs. Jackson Smith III at the Smith home in Raleigh. Thirty friends and relatives of the couple were entertained. Among the guests were Laura’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Carpenter, her brother, Chuck Carpenter of Raleigh, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hamrick Jr. of Kings Mountain. Laura Carpenter Honored Mrs. W.K. Mauney Sr., Mar- tha Jane Mauney and Mrs. W.K. Mauney IJr., entertained brideelect Laura Carpenter at beautiful luncheon Saturday at the Holiday Inn. Guests were served cham- pagne with lunch. Several toasts were presented by the 20 guests. Camillas decorated the tables. Guests included Mrs. Charles T. Carpenter Jr., mother of the bride-to-be, and Miss Fanny Carpenter, her great-aunt. Out of town guests included Mary Lillian Elliott of Charlotte, Mrs. Packard Elliott: of Shelby, Mrs. Gary Ball of Lenoir, Mrs. Jimmy Brown of Anderson, S.C., and Senator Helen Marvin of Gastonia.
