EMMA PEARSON ...Notes 90th birthday Mrs. Emma Pearson Grover Suit Is Filed Gloria Horton, who was fired in April as town clerk of Grover, and her husband, Steve, have fil- ed a half-million dollar suit against Mayor Bill McCarter and three Grover councilmen. Councilmen listed in the suit are Ronald Queen, Dennis McDaniel and Jim Howell, the three men who voted to ter- minate her employment. Coun- cilman Bill Camp was not pre- sent at the meeting and coun- cilman Grady Ross was not a member of the board at that time. He was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Vickie Smith, who voted against Mrs. Horton’s dismissal and later resigned. The suit, filed December 1 in BIG It's just a Big Furniture Sale. It starts Jan. 13th, in Kings Mountain. Cleveland County District Court by Mrs. Horton’s attorney, Claywood Corry of Kings Mountain, seeks $539,017.15 in punitive damages, a jury trial and repayment of attorney fees. The suit alleges that Mrs. Hor- ton suffered undue harassment from Mayor McCarter and ter- mination for no other reason than “the pleasure of the board.” Her’ husband claims that because of the ‘injuries, damages, humiliation and men- tal suffering sustained by his wife” that he was denied “her services, society and consortium.” Mrs. Horton was hired as town clerk under the CETA pro- gram. She was relieved of her ti- tle as town .clerk and named deputy town clerk in January of 1980 under a former board’s ad- ministration and was later fired by that same board. Letters sAnFAne True Meaning TANT RE CARNAHAN To The Editor: A special thank you from the residents and staff of the Kings Moun- ‘tain Convalescent Center go to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Moss of Kings Moun- tain. On the night of Dec. 6th the Kings Mountain Convalescent Center Resident Council, staff members and family participated in a holiday dinner and party at the Holiday Inn in Kings Mountain. After ‘the party, as we were ready to pay our checks and leave, we were told ‘by the cashier that our checks would be taken care of by a gentleman -and his wife dining there that evening. A young woman came to our group and announced that she and her husband wanted to take care of all the checks that evening because they wanted “everyone to have a Merry Christmas.” As we talked with this couple we learned that they recently lost all their possessions in a fire, but stated, “so many have been so good to us, we wanted to give something back.” ~ Again, a very special thank you goes to Ed and Sandra Moss, from the residents, staff and family who attended the party. We are deeply’ touched by their gesture and feel that we have been blessed qt 1 ‘true meaning of Christmas. GUANA HRINA Vickie Tedford Administrator Thanks, Alex McCallum To the Editor: I would like to publicly thank Alex McCallum for his outstanding work and leadership in the American Cancer Society. His hard work and dedication to this cause will long be remembered by the communi- ty that he has lived and served in for several years. I certainly wish him luck in his new employment and feel confident he will serve his new community with the same enthusiasm as we in Cleveland County have witnessed. Thanks Again! : Sincerely. G. Burel Harris, President Cleveland County Unit of The American Cancer Society Thanks From Head Start Dear Head Start Supporters: ~ Christmas is a time for warmth and love, giving and caring, It arouses in many of us deep emotion for the beauty of life itself. It is also a time to remember those who have had special meaning to use throughout the year. 5 In Head Start, Christmas is a time when parent involvement is at its peak, private sector collaboration and community support is more visi- ble and staff are motivated by that gleam of excitement in children’s eyes. How unfair it would be not to share some of this with you, since you are the persons who have shared with us the entire year by voicing your support for this early childhood program that has proven its ef- Fotiveness. © If we had one Christmas wish for you it would be that each of you gould be with Head Start enrollees and feel that love, or watch that glow on their faces; or see the parents who might not otherwise have been able to celebrate Christmas with gifts, food, or Christmas trees were it not for Head Start programs tapping resources to make this possible. £ Thank you for giving us this opportunity, and as we shre with you a message from the Head Start child, we hope the spirit of Christmas will fin your heart. Merry Chritmas and Happy New Year.
