Involve me, and I'll understand.” — Author Unknown This seems to be the unwritten motto of West Elementary School this year. This involve- ment includes students, prin- cipal, teachers, parents, and other staff and concerned citizens. It involves changes and growth. One of the changes includes a new principal, who has assumed a strong leadership. Jane C. Shields assumed the role as prin- cipal at West after serving Kings Mountain District Schools as Director of the Exceptional Children’s Program. Under Ms. Shield’s guidance, goals were established in order to strive for excellence. These goals include: (1) to instill a sense of pride, self- esteem, and responsibility in each individual; (2) to emphasize the importance of mathematics in the school curriculum; (3) to enhance the appearance of the school and grounds; and (4) to in- sure effective communication among parents, teachers, and students. The most visible changes are “the renovations in our school. These include installation of carpet, refurbished health room, and a general “spring cleaning” throughout the school. The educational program at West School is changing and im- proving. For better-balanced development of each student, West strives to insure a well- rounded educational program. Daily instruction is provided in math, reading, social ‘studies, physical education, science, language, handwriting, and health. To help get started in the new math program, Mrs. Bunny Parrish Math Coordinator with the Orange County School System in Orlando, Florida, con- ducted an inspiring. math workshop for the West faculty and techers from other schools. She demonstrated various ways to teach the basic math skills. Another stimulating fact of the changing curriculum is a new ‘Campbell, Scott Campbell, Jody Champion, J.B. The objective of this program is to improve cardiovascular fitness and enhance general well-being. Some of these changes could not have been done without the aid of a strong’and supportive P.T.O. A Western Round-Up was a huge monetary success which upgraded West’s library collection and classroom materials. Some things have not chang- ed,but have continued to im- prove such as a strong volunteer program and the combined ef- fort of teachers, staff, and parents in nurturing a har- monious atmosphere that is con- ~ ducive to learning.
