The BBB of Charlotte was originally chartered to serve 27 counties, but until recently its work has been confined to greater Charlotte, explained Clarence Bridges, district representative. “Businesses only hear about 10 percent of the complaints,” Bridges says. “It’s not the com- plaints that put them out of business, it’s the people they don’t hear from.” Bridges began last week trying to interest area busineses in becoming members of the BBB. Memberships start at $150 for a 1-to-10 employee business and run to $800 for firms employing 800 or more. For that, the BBB serves as a liason of sorts between businesses and comsumers, “Most people think the BBB : just handles complaints,” Bridges said, “but only one in seven of the calls we get is about a complaint. The rest are from people who want to know something about a firm before they do business with it.” That’s the kind of service BBB stresses, he said. The firm pushes the theme “Before you do something dumb, do something smart—call the Better Business Bureau.” The BBB does handle com- plaints, and he has extensively detailed coplain forms con- sumers can fill out and file, and the agency also provides arbitra- tion service. General Motors, for example, has specified the BBB for any actions on its 1983 cars. There is also charities review published regularly, and a panel set up to arbitrate disputes over dry cleaning problems, among other services. > There is a “hot line” which members can call collect for in- formation, and there will be a WATS line when the BBB gets enough members, he said. The BBB works “to protect business as well as the con- sumers”, he said. “But our main misson is to educate the public.” a son, Steve Harmon of Kings Mountain; a stepdaughter, Mrs. C.V.
