Obituaries
ELVA McSWAIN
Elva Reynolds McSwain, 84,
of Route 2, Kings Mountain,
died Wednesday at 6 p.m. at
Kings Mountain Hospital
following an illness of six weeks.
A Cherokee County, S.C.,
native, she was the daughter of
the late Albert and Mattie Gun-
thorpe Reynolds. Her husband
was the late Perry Franklin
McSwain.
She was a member of Oak
Grove Baptist Church, where
services were conducted Friday
at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Bruce Han-
cock, the Rev. James Holder and
the Rev. Dan Wallace. Burial
was in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two sons,
Charlie Franklin McSwain of
Kings Mountain and Horace
McSwain of Shelby; two
brothers, Ed Reynolds of Kings
Mountain and Clyde Reynolds
of Cherryville; a sister, Mrs. -
Marie R. Reynolds of Gaffney,
S.C.; six grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.
KURT WATSON
Kurt Edward Watson, S35, of
202 Marigold Avenue, Kings
Mountain, died Wednesday
afternoon.
He was the son of the late
Fred and Anna Dora Belcher
Watson and was a retired
employee of Carolina Western
Express. He was a World War II
veteran, a member of the In-
terstate Commerce Commis-
sioner and Practitioner Associa-
tion and the Kings Mountain
Little Theatre. He was a member
of Macedonia Baptist Church.
He is survived by seven
brothers, Ken, Arthur, Frank,
Charles, Wes and Don Watson,
all of Winston-Salem, and C.J.
~ Watson of Atlanta; and six
sisters, Sue Donathan of King,
Helen McPhearson of Beckley,
West Virginia, Martha Kessiner
and Barbar Stegman, both of In-
dianapolis, Indiana, Kathy Marti
of Charlotte and Cora Lee Billips
of Winston-Salem.
Services were conducted
Saturday at 11 a.m. at
Macedonia Baptist Church by
Dr. Tom Patterson. Burial was
in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
SILAS FOURSHEE
CASAR - Silas Wardell Four-
shee, 73, of Route 1, died
Wednesday at Kings Mountain
Convalescent Center.
A Gaston County native, he
was the son of the late James
and Letha Sitrewalt Fourshee
and was a retired employee of
Dora Yarn Mill in Cherryville.
He is survived by his wife,
Ellen Buff Fourshee; two sons,
Garland Fourshee of Bessemer
City and Joe Billy Fourshee of
- Sherills Ford; three sisters, Mrs.
Coleen Sisk of GAstonia, Mrs.
Glenda Grigg of Lincolnton and
Mrs. Jewel Branton of Iron STa-
tion; two brothers, Jesse Four-
shee of Cherryville and Paul
Fourshee of Hickory; a- step-
brother, Nelson Ledbetter of
Kings Mountain; a sister, Mrs.
Paul Champion of Waco; two
stepsisters, Mrs. Lela Painter of
Kings Mountain and Mrs. Lola
Condry of Sumter, S.C.; 10
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
Services were conducted Fri-
day at Carpenter’s Funeral
Home in Cherryville by the Rev.
Cecil Buff and the Rev. Hinkle
kayfield Jr. Burial was in City
Cemetery, Cherryville.
ESSIE BLACK
SPINDALE - Essie Mae Col-
lins Black, 82, of 1119 East Main
Street, died Friday at Rutherford
Hospital.
An Anderson County, S.C.,
native, she was the daughter of
the late John and Margaret
Wilson Collins. Her husband
was the late James Henry Black.
She was a retired textile
employee.
She is survived by four sons,
John William Black of Orlando,
Fla., Roy Black of Spindale,
Bobby Black of Grover and R.H.
Black of Hickory; three
daughters, Mrs. Hazel Ledford
. of Grover, Mrs. Elvie Hannah of
Dallas and Mrs. Darleen Yar-
brough of Kings Mountain; a
sister, Mrs. Lettie Heaton of
Piedmont, S.C.; 31 grand-
children and 24 great-
grandchildren.
Services were conducted Sun-
day at 3 p.m. at Main Street Bap-
tist Church by the Rev. Guy
Johnson and the Rev. Vernon
Moore. Burial was in Mountain
Rest Cemetery in Kings Moun-
tain.
LEE BOWEN
GROVER - Lee G. Bowen,
71, of Route 1, died Sunday at
Cleveland Memorial Hospital.
He was a Cleveland County
native and a retired textile
employee. He was a member of
Allen Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, |

Memorial Baptist Church by the
Rev. Dean Proctor and the Rev.
James Galloway. Burial was in
Patterson Springs Baptist
Church cemetery.
LITHIA BUMGARDNER
Lithia Mabry Bumgardner,
77, of Route 1, Kings Mountain,
died Saturday at Kings Moun-
tain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland Coun-
ty, she was the daughter of the
late John H. and Bessie Hayes
Mabry. Her husband was the
late Hazel B. Bumgardner. She
was a member of Central United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons,
Harvey Bumgardner of Raleigh
and Don Bumgardner of Kings
Mountain; a daughter, Miss
Bessie Bumgardner of Kings
Services were conducted Mon-
day at 3 p.m. at Central United
"Methodist: Church by the Rev.
Ivan Stephans. Burial was in
Mountain Rest Cemetery.
EFFIE THOMAS
Effie Garris Thomas, 89, of
804 Henry Street, Kings Moun-
tain, died Monday at Kings
Mountain Convalescent Center.
A Lancaster, S.C., native, she
was the daughter of the late
Harper and Ella Fincher Garris.
She was married to the late
William Vernon Thomas.
Surviving are three stepsons,
Fincher Thomas of Rock-
ingham, Gaylord Thomas of
brother, Burke Garris of West
Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs.
Fred Lowery of Columbia, S.C.;
four stepbrothers, Boyd Garris
of Clintowood, Va., Mack Gar-
ris of Gastonia, Broadus Garris
of Sanford, Fla., and Harper
Garris of Indiana; four stepsister,
Mrs. Bill Bumgardner of In-
diana, Mrs. Jack Vickery of
Montgomery, Ala., Mrs. Max
Helms of Apopka, Fla., and Mrs.
Howard Addington of Sanford,
Fla.; five grandchildren; 23 step-
grandchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.
