The Mountainettes, who won the regular season title in the Southwestern 3-A Conference, finished their season with an overall 22-5 record, best ever for a KMHS girls team. Mooresville, from the Western Piedmont 3-A Con- ference, turned the game around in the second half after KM'’s junior forward, Sonya McClain, got into foul trouble and had to spend much of the time on the . bench. .in the second half, but despite McClain’s foul problems, the Mountainettes battled back to take the lead at 49-48 with 1:31 to play. But, Kings Mountain was forced into a fouling situa- tion after Mooresville’s Sandy Westmoreland hit two free ‘throws seconds later, and the Lady Blue Devils hit six straight foul shots in the final minute to ice the victory. Trina Hamrick led the KM scoring with 21 points and Mc- 7 Clain added 11. * kk The girls opened tournament action Thursday with a 71-59 victory over East Rutherford. Kings Mountain led most of The Mountainettes led by 16-11 after the first period and 35-21 at halftime, but the Lady Cavs came back in the third period to outscore the KM five 23-10 and cut the difference to 4544 going into the fourth «period. McClain led the KM effort with 23 points. Hamrick added 17 and Tootie Roberts 13. Frank Parker’s shot at the buzzer bounded away .as the Mounties fell a pont shy of upsetting Crest in Thursday’s opening round. The Mounties, who finished 14-10 overall in their first season under Coach Charles Lockee, led Boys Club Team Wins 11th The Kings Mountain Boys Club senior team of coach Dan- ny McDowell notched its eleventh victory of the season against only one defeat with a 58-54 decision over Concord Saturday at Kings Mountain. This marks only the second time in four years the Concord team has tasted defeat, both losses coming this year at the hands of Kings Mountain. The Kings Hoyle Winner Coleman Hoyle won first place honors in the Cleveland County Bass Club’s tournament Saturday at Santee Cooper. He caught fish weighing a total of 12 pounds, 15 ounces. Second’ palce went to Rick LaMontain with catches totaling nine pounds, five ounces. Gary Smart was third with a catch of seven pounds. ; Hoyle and James Osborne tied for the big fish with six- pounders. The members had a total catch of 63 pounds, eight ounces. Spires Second Stuart Spires of Kings Moun- tain finished second in his age division and ninth overall in the one-mile fun run in the fourth annual Wilmington Marathon Sunday. Spires, son of Mr. and Mrs. ~ Millage Spires, ran the course in x oa » 6:59.2. YHAZWI BO The 12-year-old - Central ~ School sixth grader competed in the 17-under age division. A marathon, 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run and fun run were held. The Kings Mountain Boys Club junior league all star team (ages 11,12,13) fell to Johnson City, Tenn. 69-68 in thge Mid- south Classic Tournament in Bristol, Tenn. over the weekend. The Kings Mountain team was coached by Bobby Maner and Kenneth Wilson and was led in scoring by Joe McClain and Jamie Surratt.
