home run-hitting ability. The
team is coached by Howard
White of the Forest City Recrea-
tion Department.
~ Perhaps the two teams to beat
will be coming to Kings Moun-
tain from South Carolina. They
are Loftis Manufacturing of
Greenville, last year’s South
Carolina Open Champions, and
Ardis Roofing Company of
Pickens, the team many believe
will win the Palmetto. State
crown this year.
The Pickens team features
former Clemson University foot-
ball standout Larry Brumley, a
strong home run hitter.
Shoemaker calls Ardis “a power-
ful team which I believe will be
the strongest in the tournament.
They'll score a lot of runs.”
Gaston College, fresh from
winning the North Carolina
Community College champion-
ship, will also be entered. The
team is sponsored by Buford
Spicer of Kings Mountain and
features several Kings Mountain
players, including Eric Spicer
and Leard Keeter. Jeff Capps of
Gaston made the All-State Com-
munity College team.
The top two teams out of the
150-team Charlotte City League
are also entered. They are Sports
Plus, the Charlotte City champs
last year, and Southern
Wholesale.
“Eight of the 16 teams entered
can play with anybody,” said
Shoemaker. “This will be by far
the best tournament in this part
of the state this year. Usually, a
tournament will have one or two
strong teams, but this one is
loaded. Loc fans will be able to
Ome +0 R.feams from
North ‘and South Carolina, and
Ill guarantee them that they’ll
set one or more teams that will
win a state championship this
year.
“Fans in Kings Mountain are
real avid sports fans, and we're
expecting good fan support,” he
added. “This is going to be an an-
nual tournament, and if the fans
really come out, we'll be able to
get these kind of teams to come
back every year. The tourna-
ment is starting off much better
than we ever thought it would.”
Games will begin on Friday at
7 p.m., Saturday at 12 noon and
Sunday at 1 p.m. Trophies will
be awarded to the championship
team, runner-up, most valuable
player, all-tournament . team,
leading home run hitter, and ie
dividual trophies will be awarded
to each member of the winning
team.
“The Shriners really ap-
preciate the fine cooperation
we've gotten so far,” Champion
said. “Anyone interesting in
helping us in any way, either by
purchasing barbecue, attending
the ballgames, or working during
the three days, will be welcome.”
Shriners, city officials and
other dignataries will ride in the
parade, which will begin:at 11
a.m. Saturday. The parade will
originate at the intersection of
Mountain and Watterson streets
