May 5. 1983 Mounties Lose South Point erased deficits with two four-run innings Fri- day night in Belmont to defeat Kings Mountain 10-8 in a Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball game. ; The win clinched a SWC playoff berth for the Red Raiders. South Point and Shelby from the Eastern Division ‘and Chase and R-S Central from the West will advance to playoff ac- tion next week. Kings Mountain was schedul- ed to end its season Wednesday afternoon at home against East Gaston. Those two teams were rained out Tuesday night. The Mountaineers used the heavy bat of designated hitter Kevin Echols to stay” with the first-place Raiders Friday. His two-run homer over the right- centerfield fence highlighted a KM Netters Win Two, Kings Mountain High’s boys tennis team won two of three matches during the past week to end their season with a 7-2 Southwestern 3-A Conference record and 13-3 overall mark. The Mountaineers defeated Crest 7-2 Friday, lost to South Point 8-1 Monday and defeated North Gaston 8-1 Tuesday. The team will be idle until next Wednesday, when Sec- tional Tournament action begins at Shelby High School. The top four finishers doubles competition at Shelby will advance to the Western Regional Tournament the following week in Hickory. “The team did a real good job in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year,” Coach Ed Guy said. “We lost half of our players off a team that went 8-8 last year and played tougher competition. Thomas Putnam 6-4, Patriots Are Second In Shelby Track Meet Kings Mountain Junior High finished second in a three-team Western Associaton track meet last week at Shelby. Crest won the event with 67 points. Kings Mountain had 50 points and Shelby 30. The Patriots set several per- sonal season highs during the meet. Andre Byers won the long jump with a leap of 18’6”, a per- sonal high for him; John Pettus won the high jump with a jump of 5°8”, a season’s high for him; and Calvin Stephens won the shot put with an unofficial con- ference record toss of 54°11”, Tony Moroe finished fourth in the high jump and Robert Huggins was third in the shot. Other finishes for the Patriots included: Triple jump- Andre Byers se- cond. Discus- Calvin Stephens third, Robert Huggins fourth. 110 low hurdles- Hollifield third. 1600 run - T.C. Bowden, Aubrey Hollifield, Allen McNamara and Jerry Jor- dan, first. Lenny The Patriots were scheduled to go to Crest Wednesday to meet Crest and East McDowell in the final regular season meet. The conference meet will be next Wednesday at Burns. Champion Grabs Lead In Major League Race Champion’s Contracting took an early lead in the Dixie Youth Major League baseball race last week, scoring victories over the Jaycees and Kiwanis. Champion’s whipped the Kiwanis nine 9-1 Tuesday and defeated the Jaycees 11-8 Fri- day. In other games last week, Rotary edged C&C Metal 6-5 Monday and the Jaycees outscored Plonk Oil 8-6. Plonk came back Tuesday to edge Rotary 4-3 and Kiwanis edged C&C 5-3 Friday. Rotary scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat C&C Monday. Brannon’s double and singles by Taylor and Payseur were the big blows. Henderson’s two-run homer in the top of the fifth had given C&C a 5-2 lead. Plonk, Legion Winners In DYL Dixie Youth Minor League baseball action got underway last week at the Deal Street Park. Plonk Oil defeated the Yankees 8-5 Thursday and the American Legion whipped Op- timist 114 Friday. Sisk hit a home run and Rusty Bridges had a single and hurled the win for Plonk Oil. Robbins hit a home run for the Yankees. Ross was the winning pitcher and doubled to lead the Legion over Optimist. Parker had a tri- ple and Slycord a single for the losers. Jaycees scored six runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Plonk 8-6. Toby Deaton had a double during the uprising and Junior Green added a single. Green finished with two hits to lead the Jaycee plate at- tack. Chris Plonk was 4-for4, in- cluding a double and two home . runs, to lead Plonk Oil. Dale Green hurled Tuesday’s 9-1 victory for Champion’s over Kiwanis. Aaron Anderson’s first inning single was the only hit off Green. Green had two home runs to lead the Champion attack. John Forrest, Chip Cash and Scott Wheeler added singles. Plonk Oil scored three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Rotary 4-3 Tuesday. Three walks, a hit batsman and Larry Stone’s double sparked the first inning rally. Grigg’s triple was the big blow for Rotary. Kiwanis scored three runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and edge C&C 5-3 Fri- day. A double by Carroll, single by Ramsey and. a C&C error led to the runs. Graham led the losers at bat with a double and single. Champion’s broke an 8-all deadlock with three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Jaycees Friday. Singles: by Chad Carpenter * and Matt Bevis highlighted the rally and the winners also took ‘advantage of three bases on balls. Junior Green had a homer‘and double, Shaun Smith had a double and two singles and Gene Whetstine had a single and homer for the Jaycees. five-run rally in the fourth which gave the Mounties a 5-2 lead, and his two-run belt in the fifth gave the Mounties a 7-6 lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as South Point came back in the bottom of the inning to score four runs and take a 6-5 lad. A fielder’s- choice, three walks and singles by Lee and Woody led to the four runs. Peeler walked and Echols homered over the right- centerfield fence again as KM came back to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the fifth. But South Point came right back in the bot- tom of the inning to score four more runs and take a 10-6 lead. Kings : Mountain, closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth as Ballew reached on an error, moved to second when Todd Cloninger walked and scored on Peeler’s single. : Echols and Ballew finished with two hits each to lead the KM plate attack, and their bats drove in seven of the eight kM runs.
