Three Kings Mountain High
tennis players are competing in
the Western Regional Tourna-
ment in Hickory this week, hav-
ing qualified by placing in the
top four in the Sectional Tourna-
ment at Shelby last week.
Senior Jay Schronce qualified
in singles play and junior Jeff
Barnette and sophomore Brad
Jones qualified in doubles com-
petition.
The top eight finishers in both
singles and doubles at Hickory
will qualify for the state tourna-
ment next week at Chapel Hill.

Schronce, seeded fifth, won
four matches at Shelby before
losing in the semi-finals to Rusty
Woy of Shelby, 6-0, 6-3. Before
losing to Woy, Schronce knock-
ed off number three-seeded
Tony White of South Caldwell
4-6, 64, 6-3. White was ranked
26th in the state last year.
In earlier matches, Schronce
defeated John Eaton of Cher-
ryville 6-3, 6-0; Robbie Wilson of
Hibriten 6-0, 64; and Ricky
Falls of Burns, 6-0, 6-1.
Jones and Barnette, seeded
number three, received a first
round bye and then defeated
three opponents before bowing
in the semi-finals to Keiger and
Dowdy of Shelby, 6-1, 64.
They defeated Sigmon and
Cooper of Bandys 6-1, 6-0; Cart-
ner and Ross of East Lincoln
6-0, 6-2; and fifth-seeded Ken
and Cogan of Hickory, 5-7, 6-2,
6-2,
Kings Mountain’s Howard
Allen was eliminated in the first
round. by‘ Brian Riley of
Newton-Conover 6-1, 6-2; and
the KM doubles team of Mike
Bowles and Thomas Putnam lost
in the third round to sixth-seeded
Henshaw and Lutz of Shelby
6-1, 64. They received a first
round bye and defeated Jennings
and Hook of Bessemer City 6-0,
6-1 in the second round.
As a team, the Mounties
finished fifth with 23 points.
“Overall, our players did
about what I expected/them to
do,” Coach Ed Guy noted. “In
most cases, they were beaten by
better players, so I was pleased
with all of them,
“Schronce did a real fine job,
and so did Barnette and Jones.
They’re going to be the nucleus
for a real good team next year
that could contend for the con-
ference championship.”
Bees Win
Two Games
The Vitamin Bees won two
games in Dixie Youth Minor
League baseball action last week
at Deal Street Park.
The Bees defeated the
Yankees 15-5 Tuesday and the
Optimist Club 136 Friday. In
other action, the Cardinals
defeated Plonk’s Patriots 9-5
Thursday and the American
Legion outscored the Yankees
15-8 Friday.
Jenkins hurled the win and
went 1-for-1 at the plate to lead
the Bees over the Yankees Tue-
day. Moore and Broadwell were
2-for-3 each. Reynolds, Green
and Young had a hit each for the
Yankees.
Withers hurled the win and
had a pair of singles as the Car-
dinals defeated Plonk Thursday.
Sisk had a double for the
Patriots.
Hopper hurled the win and
clubbed a pair of triples to lead
the Legion over the Yankees Fri-
day. Young had a double for the
Y ankees.
Broadwell was the winning
pitcher as the Bees outscored Op-
timist Friday. Roberts had the
only hit for the Bees, but they
took advantage of nine bases on
balls and several errors. Rodgers
had a double and Parker and
Slycord added singles for Op-
timist.,

Career At Western

Robinson, Western Carolina
University’s righthander baseball
pitcher from Kings Mountain,
completed his WCU baseball
career recently in record-setting
fashion.
The 6-1, 200-pound senior,
will leave WCU'’s baseball pro-
gram as the school’s all-time best
relief pitcher. In his four seasons,
Robinson set Western Carolina
records in most pitching ap-
pearances in a career (63 and
saves (20). During the course of
his career he established single
season records in pitching ap-
pearances (19 in 1981) and saves
. (seven, in 1981 and 1982).
Robinson was also Western’s
top pitcher in 1983 in terms of
total victories. He had a 7-3 won-

lost record for the Cats as WCU
posted a 25-20 overall record
and finished third in the
Southern Conference (9-5)
behind league champ The
Citadel and runner-up East Ten-
nessee State.
In his career Robinson pitched
11843 innings and never started
a game. He had a career earned
run average of 3.65 and had
ERA’ of 1.70 and 1.77 in 1981
an 1982, respectively. He had a
15-7 career won-lost record.
After a slow start this season,
Robinson had several outstan-
ding games. In Western’s last
game of the season (May 1 in the
second game of a doubleheader
with The Citadel), Robinson was
