Peeler collected 17 hits in 38 trips to the plate for a .447 average. Champion collected 17 hits in 51 trips for a .333 average. The Mountaineers compiled a 211 team batting average with 91 hits in 432 trips to the plate. Junior righthander Tommy Batchler led in the pitching department. He worked 58 inn- ings and compiled a 2.89 earned run average. Coach Barry Gibson, whose club finished 3-13 overall and 2-11 in the Southwestern 3-A Conference, loses only three players off this year’s team and looks to 1984 with a lot of op- timist. Brian Webster of first-place Plonk Oil Company hurled a no- hitter Friday to lead Plonk to a 140 victory over the Jaycees. Ray Graham’s grand-slam home run highlighted a seven-run fifth inning which'lifted C&C Metal: over Rotary night. In other action last week, Rotary whipped Kiwanis 144 and C&C trimmed the Jaycees 7-6 Monday, Plonk Oil defeated Champion’s 12-6 Tueday, and Champion’s defeated Kiwanis 14-7 Friday. Webster allowed only two runners in scoring position in turning in the season’s first no- hitter Friday. He got all the working room he needed in the first inning, when his run-scoring triple helped spark a seven-run ‘rally. | C&C Metal trailed Rotary 54 going into the bottm of the fifth inning Thursday. C&C went ahead 7-5 on two errors and singles by Henderson and Con- ner, and then Graham closed out the scoring with the season’s first 11-5 Thursday grand slam home run. He also had a single to lead the C&C plate attack. Rotary scored in every inning to defeat Kiwanis 144 Monday, Grigg had a home run and triple, Morrow a home run and double and Brannon a double and single to lead the winners at the plate. McDaniel had a home run and single and Hamilton had a dou- «=ble-and single for Kiwanis. Honeycutt’s triple drove in the winning run as C&C edged Jaycees 7-6 Monday. He also had a single. The two teams had identical scores of 70-70-140 over the first 36 holes of play. Stines scored a birdie on the first hole of sudden death to win over Powers’ par. Dick McCleney and Jim Wiles of Shelby finished third with a 66-76-142, and John Howze and Scott Cloninger of Kings Mountain were fourth with a 69-74—143. y Dean Hunt and Trip Boinest of Shelby fired a 141 to win the championship B flight. Stoney Jackson and Mal Brutko of Kings Mountain took second with a 142. Blaine Froneberger and Paul Haynes of Shelby were third with a 142. He lost in the first round to Daren Harper of Brevard 6-0, 6-2, and then bounced back to win three matches and claim the title. His most impressive win came G00 in the semi-finals, when he knocked off Ron Chase of Lenoir 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
