The Kings Mountain Moun- taineers were really on the ball Friday night as they put on a great offensive and defensive show, led by quarterback Wayne Mullinax, to upset the Shelby oe High School Golden Lions by a ed score of 19-7. . “Mullinax played his best game of the season tonight,” commented Kings Mountain head football coach Bill Bates. The Mountaineers dominated the ball from the very beginning as they took possession of the ball on the Shelby 27-yard line after recovering a fumble from Shelby halfback Wayne Howell. Before giving the ball up to Kings Mountain, however, the Golden Lions had picked up a first down—the first of the game. Upon receiving the ball, Kings Mountain proceeded promptly to go four downs and being forc- ed to punt—making it look like a typical Kings Mountain vs. Shelby game—two hard-nosed teams eager for the victory. Shelby was also forced into a punting situation after picking up only 6 yards on three downs. Then it started—Kings Moun- tain started a drive that was to extend for 62-yards to end in a 20-yard touchdown by Mountie halfback Joe Cornwell. A combination of a 1-yard run by Philbert Smith and a 19-yard run by Wayne Mullinax, picked up the first Kings Mountain first down and set the pace for the Mountie onslought. After an incomplete pass, Mullinax carried for a 7-yard gain and then handed off to Steve Spencer on the next play for another first down. Again Kings Mountain gained a first down as Joe Cornwell and Steve Spencer pushed their way through the Shelby Lion defense for an eleven yard gain. Joe Cornwell put the icing on the cake, so to speak, as he bull- dozed his way for 20 yards to the Shelby end zone and the first Mountie touchdown. The point after attempt failed and the Mountaineers took the lead, 6-0. Kings Mountain kicked-off to Shelby—giving Shelby posses- sion of the ball for the remainder of the quarter. Kings Mountain’s statistics told the whole story, even from the first quarter. During the first quarter the Mountaineers had picked up four first downs and rushed the Lion defense for 78 yards gained. The Lions picked up two first downs and only 12 yards rushing. The second quarter proved to be another case of Kings Moun- tain dominating the ball. Shelby had the ball for the first two plays of the second quarter, being forced to punt on the fourth down. In the next series of plays, Kings Mountain picked up two more first downs before losing the ball on a pass interception by Shelby’s Wayne Howell. A loss and a penalty against Shelby spoiled their attempt for the first down as they again lost the ball to the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers still show- ed the typical Mountie spirit as they picked up two more first downs. On the last series of plays for the Mounties, Steve Spencer and Clark Mauney picked up a total of seven yards on the first two downs. The third down was no again. With a fourth down situation and only two yards to go for the touchdown, Kings Mountain’s Steve Spencer dived for a two yard gain and the TD. The extra point was no good and the score stood at 12-0. Kings Mountain punted to Shelby with less than two minutes left in the first half. On the second down, Shelby half- back Ted Whitworth picked up 8-yards for the Lions. However, on the third down, quarterback Robbie Reynolds was thrown for a 10-yard loss. : And that’s the way it ended at half-time. Kings Mountain 12, Shelby 0.
