ELIZABETH CLEMMONS Elizabeth Sargeant Clemmons, 79, died Thursday at Kings Mountain Convalescent Center. A native of Six Miles, S.C., she was a retired textile employee and merchant. She was the daughter of the late John and Nannie Garrett Sargeant and the wife of the late Hubert G. Clemmons. She is survived by two sisters, Sonvilla McDowell of Columbia, S.C., and Emmie Sanford of Westminister, S.C. Services were conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home by the Rev. LK. Fannin. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. H.M. TATE NEWTON - Howell Melvin Tate, 73, of 205 Highway 10 East, died Wednesday. A Cleveland County native, he was the son of the late Thomas C. and Elizabeth Camp- bell Tate. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was a former employee of Dover Mill in Shelby. He was a former Mason and member of the Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Padgett Tate; two sons, HAS wl Ua yl Hi Fla, and Manly S. Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Bobby Smith of Raleigh; four brothers, F.V. Tate of Greenville, S.C., Earl Tate and Tom Tate, both of Kings Mountain, and Clifford Tate of Gastonia; a sister, Mrs. Mary Dale of Hickory; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. Services were conducted Fri- day at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Malcolm Ivey. Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to North Carolina Lions Camp Dogwood at Sherrills Ford, or the American Heart Association. CHARLES STOWE Charles Frank Stowe, 71, of 831 North Piedmont Avenue, Kings Mountain, died Friday. A Cleveland County native, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stowe and was a textile overseer. He was a ate “of Sia member of Kings Mountain Bap- tist Church. SWOFFORD ROCHESTER, Wash. - Mrs. Katie Swofford Pittman, 59, of Rochester, died Monday. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Ethel Green Swofford. She is survived by her hus- band, Guy Pittman of the home; one son, Tommy Pittman of Rochester; one daughter, Mary Pittman of Vancouver, Canada; six brothers, Roy Swofford of Shelby, Howard Swofford of Kings Mountain, Glenn Swof- ford of Jacksonville, Fla., James Swofford and Alfred Swofford of Minneapolis, Minn., and Lee Swofford of Dallas, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Alice Arcand of Hugo, Minn.; and three grand- children. CARY OSBORN Cary Dunlap Osborn, 62, of 313 West Gold Street, Kings Mountain, died Monday at Kings Mountain Hospital. A native of Anson County, he was the son of the late Charles Edward and Margaret Shaw Osborn, and was a retired teacher in the Kings Mountain School System. He was a veteran of World War II and also served with the U.S. Coast Guard. He received his B.S. degree, Jrom ba HET. 5 ese Masters. degree from | Ap- palachian. Piedmont Ave. 739-2591 Cop Car Damaged In Chase From Page 1-A According to police, the chase began when Phipps allegedly crashed his car into glass doors and windows at First Union Na- tional Bank in Gastonia. Gaston County Rural Police gave chase in Gastonia and continued into Cleveland County, where Kings Mountain and Shelby Police, along with the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department joined in, Phipps car reportedly ran a road block in Kings Mountain and ran his car into the back of the Kings Mountain police car. About 10 minutes later, police allege that Phipps, who was be- ing chased by two police cars, sideswiped the KMPD car and caused it to spin around and hit a Gaston Rural Police car head- on. Several minutes later, Phipps reportedly rammed into a car driven by Jane I. Dellinger, knocking it into a ditch. Phipps reportedly wrecked about seven minutes later.
