A tour of one of the world’s
oldest civilizations and a chance
to visit with family now station-
ed on the Korean Penisula com-
bined to make an ideal vacation
for Kings Mountain family who
took part in the Reunion in
Korea program, sponsored by
the Korea National Tourism
Corporation.
Mr. and Mrs. Yates Harbison
joined their son, 1st Lt. David A.
Harbison, who is a member of
the 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry
Regiment stationed at Camp
Liberty Bell near the Korean
demilitarized zone, for a five-day
visit in the Republic of Korea
(ROK). They were welcomed by
top United States Forces in
Korea (USFK) officials who
briefed the group on the U.S.
commitment ot the ROK and
the threat facing peace and
security in the area.
Reunion in Korea was
established in recognition of the
centennial of diplomatic rela-
tions between the U.S. and the
ROK. It demonstrates the
Republic’s appreciation of
American contributions to
security on the Korean penisula

USFK and Department of
Defense civilian personnel to
visit Korea at a substantial dis-
count. Although tour costs vary
according to departure and
return points, the entire trip,
which ‘includes round-trip air
fare, hotel accomodations, all
meals and tours, is priced, in
most cases, less than a standard
one-way fare to Korea.
USFK representatives accom-
panied the Reunion group
throughout the program, which
included tours of the United Na-
tions Command Joint Security
Area at Panmunjom, the ancient
Changduk Palace in Seoul,
Bulkuksa Temple and the Na-
tional Museum in Kyong Ju, the
ancient capital of Korea’s Shilla
Dynasty.
Tour members also had the
opportunity to visit the Korean
Folk Village in Suwon, a
reproduction of a traditional
Korean village where villagers
practice the ancient crafts and
demostrate the old ways of life.
In contrast, they were given a"
tour of the massive Hyundai
shipyard in Ulsan where modern
craftsmen work in heavy in-
dustry.
Throughout the visit par-
ticipants stayed at first class
hotels and were given the oppor-
tunity to dine on traditional
Korean foods and be entertained
by Korean musicians and
dancers.

Seminary Lectureship
To Honor Frank Pethel
A $200,000 campaign to
establish a lectureship at Union
Theological Seminary in Rich-
mond, Va., has been established
by the First Presbyterian
Church in Greensboro in
memory of James Franklin
Pethel, who died recently after
serving as the church’s organist
and choirmaster for 23 years.
He was former organist at
First Presbyterian Church in
Kings Mountain.
Donations may be mailed to
the Frank Pethel Lectureship in
Church Music Liturgy and Wor-
ship,” in care’ of First
Presbyterian Church, 617 North
Elm Street, Greensboro, N.C.
Pethel, who directed four
choirs and the Greensboro
church, died recently after a
bout with cancer. He learned of
the lectureship just a few days
before his death.
“His face just lit up,” said
William D. Snider, a church of-
ficer whose four chidren were
taught by Pethel. “He couldn’t

the church, Pethel was also ac-
tive in many community music
programs. He was on the Board
of Friends of the UNC-G
Library and was one of the reac-
tivators of the American Guild
of Organists. He was a Korean
War veteran.
Pethel was a graduate of the
School of Sacred Music at the
Union Seminary in New York.
He was a native of Concord.
