Lose To Crest 21-0 Mounties Can Still Make State Playoffs SPORTS Kings Mountain’s hopes of a Southwestern Conference foot- ball championship were dimmed in Friday night’s 21-0 loss to Crest in Boiling Springs, but Coach Denny Hicks feels his club has the ability to bounce back and perhaps hand the school its best record since 1964. The Chargers turned three Mountaineer mistakes into tour- chdowns Friday night to record their fourth straight SWC vic- tory and fifth straight overall. The Mountaineers fell to 3-1 in the SWC and 3-2 overall. With a capacity crowd of over 5,000 braving the wed, chilly weather, the defending SWC champs drove a grand total of 45 yards for their 21 points. They moved 25 yards for a seven-yard touchdown run by Chris Poston following a bad snap on a KM punt in the first period; fell on a loose ball in the endzone for a 140 lead late in the third quarter; and scored on a 25-yard pass play late in the fourth period after stopping the Moun- ties on downs on the KM 20. “It was a strange situation,” Coach Hicks said afterward. “We did just about what we wanted to do between the 30 yard lines. We averaged over five yards a play between the 30’s but when we got down close to the goal line, they bowed their necks and we didn’t.” Crest stopped the Moun- taineers twice inside the 10 yard line, and several other times in- side the 30. THe Mounties led the Chargers in yards rushing and first downs, but couldn’t crack the tough Crest defense in close. The Chargers recorded their third straight shutout and —THE WINNERS CORNE Le i—————— Kings Mountain High football players grading out with a winning effort in Friday's 21-0 loss to Crest are pictured above. Front row, left to right, Thomas Putnam, Steve Falls, Rocky Lutz, Kale Bagwell, Danny Moore, Curt have allowed only nine points in five ballgames. Hicks cited two keys which he feels led to the Crest victory. “Number one, the game was billed by the media as their number one defense against our number one offense,” he said. “They accepted that as a ‘challenge to attack our offense, but our offense didn’t accept it as a challenge to go after their defense. “Number two, the game could have determined the conference championship and they were us- ed to that type of situation and we weren't,” he added. “They had the mental edge on us.” Crest did the best job any team has done on Kings Moun- tain’s talented running duo of Curt Pressley and Tracy Johnson, but the Chargers still couldn’t stop them from shining. But the KM fans got an inkl- KM offense went out on the field and Johnson had to return to the sidelines because he lost his mouth piece. With Johnson out, the Crest defense had only to look for Pressley, and they stopped him dead on three running attemps. The Mounties went into punt formation, but the center’s snap sailed over punter Todd Clon- inger’s head and the Chargers threw him for a 30-yard loss back to the 25 yard line. The play fired up the Crest of- fense, and with Johnson, one of KM’s top defensive players, still on the sideline, the Chargers moved in for the score in eight plays. Kings Mountain took the en- suing kickoff and promptly mar- ched downfield, with Pressley and Johnson taking big chunks our of the Crest defensive line. The Mountaineers moved to a first-and-10 at the 12, but the Crest defense held tough and took over on downs at the seven.
