Mike Hufifstickler Scores Two In ‘63 Opening Game By Dick Woodward Mike Huffstickler carried the ball 19 times for 125 yards Fri- day night as the Mountaineers shut out the Cherryville Ironmen 18-0 before an estimated 4,100 fans in Cher- ryville’s never-before-played-in Rudisill stadium. It was Kings Mountain all the way as the Mountaineers took the opening kickoff and raced 63 yards to score in nine plays. The drive was aided by a 15 yard penalty. Larry Helms kicked off to the Mountaineer 20 to Steve Baker who returned 17 yards to the Mountaineer 37. On first down, Huffstickler cracked over his right tackle for five yards, Put nam lost one through the mid- dle, and Huffstickler picked up Kings Mouintain’s first first down with a six yard off tackle MOUNTAINEER MOMENTS LOOKING BACK 0 AT UNTAINEER FOOT® aM plunge. Pat Mur- phy sneaked one yard gain and a first down on the 42. On the next play an illegal use of the hands penalty against Cher- ryville gave the Mountaineers a first and ten on the Cherryville 27. Murphy went to the airways and found Goforth open near the sidelines. The pass netted 19 yards. : From the eight Murphy pitch- ed out to Huffstickler who skirted his own left end for the score. Hubert McGinnis’ kick was wide to the left and Kings Mountain led 6-0 with 7:16 re- maining in the first quarter. Tonnie Ware boomed the kick-off fifty yards to the Cher- ryville 10, and Jerry Randall returned to the 21. Kings Moun- tain was charged with clipping and the 15 yard penalty gave the KM 18 - Cherryville Ironmen a first down on their 36. On Cherryville’s first play # from scrimmage Harold Davis SRR. wr found an opening in the center po of the Mountaineer line and bull- ed his way for 14 yards and a first down at midfield. Quarter- back Randall picked up Cher- ryville’s second first down with a right end sweep which netted 14 yards to the Kings Mountain 36. Bill Eaker cracked off tackle for 3, Davis hit off right tackle for 4, and Upton and Eaker added two each to the 25. It looked as though the Ironmen were head- ed for paydirt but a backfield in motion penalty cost Cherryville a down as Randall tried left end for no gain and Kings Mountain declined the penalty. On second down Randall passed incomplete to Blackwelder at the 10. Two running plays later Kings Mountain was again knocking on the door with a first down on the Cherryville 39, but an illegal motion penalty cost the Moun- taineers five yards. Huffstickler swept left end for 3 yards and Goforth caught a Murphy pass, good for 6 more. At third and six Murphy threw incomplete to Richard White at the 20. Another pass attempt by Mur- phy fell incomplete to Richard White at the 20. Another pass complete and Cherryville took over on downs at their own 37. Three running plays and a pass gave Cherryville a first down on the Mountaineer 41 but a 15 yard clipping penalty set the Ironmen back to their own 41, first and 25. Cherryville’s longest gain of the night came on the next play as Eddie Upton took a double re- his own right end for twenty verse handoff and raced around yards, fumbled on the Mountaineer 35, but Larry Helms, Cherryville center, picked up the loose ball for the yards to the 29. From the 29 Randall attempted to sweep his own left end and fumbled, but recovered for a six yard loss. Three incxomplete passes halted the Cherryville drive and the Mountaineers took over on downs at their own 35. Tony Ware kicked off for the Mountaineers to start the second half and Cherryville was unable to move the ball. On fourth down Randall kicked to the Mountaineer 25.
