King was joined in his plea by City Attorney George Thomasson and one property owner, Jack Gates, of Roxboro. Mr. Gates was present to state his appreciation to the board for giving him the opportunity to clean up two houses he owns on E. Ridge Street and West Moun- tain Street. Target area for the new clean up campaign is the area flanking the new Kings Mountain By Pass and Codes Director King Crawford Appointed By Board James S. Crawford, partner in Allen’s Flower Shop, was ap- pointed to the Kings Mountain Planning and Zoning Board by the city board of commissioners Monday night. He was recommended for the appointment by Mayor John H. Moss. promises that city housing codes will be enforced. “We want cooperation voluntarily but if not, we will take every action and use every tool at hand to get the job accomplished.” Attorney City Attorney Thomasson echoed King’s remarks and said that he hopes legal action will not have to be taken in other properties but that the city is continuing to work with. proper- ty Owners. Mr. Gates said he is in process of renovating one of his proper- ties and will adhere to city hous- ing codes.” I can’t do it all over- night”, he told the Board, “but I appreciate you giving me some time to get the work done.” JIM CRAWFORD State To Re-Pave Old Highway 74 From Page 1-A traffic at each site safer, said the mayor. The board entered into agree- ment with the Department of Transportation for the two ma- jor projects. Moss said that repaving of King Street, badly damaged by Traffic detours while the By Pass was under construction, will begin in the Spring and work is expected not disrupt traffic for a long period ‘oftime. The Mayor said the city . will be responsible for acquiring right-of-way for the widening project and the state will be responsible for curbing and gut- tering and will build a sidewalk on the west side of Cleveland Avenue at East School. Responding to question of Commissioner Jim Dickey as to the length of time the resurfac- 1-85 AT HIGHWAY 161 ing job will take, the Mayor said that “This involves a grinding down process. There are many layers of resurfacing there but the city is in good shape with curb and gutter on most of King with the exception of East King where the curb is broken badly.” Commissioner Curtis Gaffney asked that some consideration be given to regulating traffic lights since there won’t be as much traffic on King now that the By- Pass is open. The Mayor said that eight. metal 30 foot poles and light fix- tures would be installed on N. Piedmont and Cleveland Ave. and the city crews would do the installation. “We feel the lights will illuminate the sidewalk areas and will give sufficient illumina- «tion for pedestrians in the bridge areas at the By-Pass changes,” he said. inter- BD y 2 i Thursday.
