Smith Sets Records
Carl Smith, Kings Mountain
freshman point guard on the
University of Massachusetts
basketball team. recently
established a new school and
Atlantic 10 Conference record
for most assists in a single
season.
Heading into the last two
regular season games, Smith had
179 assists. Both records (174)
were held ‘by the late ‘Alex
Eldridge of Massachusetts.
Smith is averaging 7.2 assists
and 7.4 points per game for the
Eaton Wins
Eaton Corporation defeated
Commercial Shearing 52-50
Saturday night to win the annual
nament.
Eaton advanced to the finals
by upsetting regular season
champion Spectrum 4845 Fri-
day night. Spectrum had to settle
for third place with a 5344 vic-
tory over Foote Mineral in the
consolation game.
Eaton began its trek to the,
championship Wednesday with
Minutemen. who are 6-10 in the
Atlantic 10 and 11-14 overall.
They are competing this week in
the Atlantic 10 Conference tour-
nament in Morgantown. W. Va.
Smith also leads the team in
steals with 39.
UMass’s 11 victories this year
are the most since the 1977-78
team posted a 15-12 record, and
the six conference wins are the
most for any UMass team since
the inception of the Atlantic 10
Conference (formerly the
Eastern 8).
Tourney
a 6549 win over Anvil Knit in
the opening round. Conimercial
Shearing, which finished second
in regular season play, drew an
opening “round “byeand then
defeated Foote Mineral6240 n=
the semi-finals.
Foote Mineral defeated
Norick Brothers 70-57 in the
opening round Wednesday
before losing to Commercial
Shearing in
finals round.
Spectrum won the regular
season title with a 9-1 record.

The Grover youth league
basketball tournament was held
last week.
The Grover Lions won the
midget division (ages 10-12),
followed by Minette Mills and
Grover Industries. Minette Mills
won the regular season title,
followed by the Lions and
Grover Industries.
In regular season play in the
.pee wee division, the Tigers won
first place, followed by the
Wolves and the Molars.
Coaches for the year were
Johnny Melton, Kenneth Put-
nam, Johnny Ledford, Daniel
Harrison, Larry Crocker, John
Brown and Rex Allen. Officials
were, Vernon Crocker, James
Goad, Dwight Chapman,
Johnny Ledford and Larry
Crocker. Scott Crocker was
scorekeeper.
The league issued a special
thanks to Larry and Ethel
Crocker, who did much of the
behind-the-scenes work to make
the season a success.

Celtics Win Title
The Celtics won both of their
games last week to win the 14-16
year old division in the Boys
Club Basketball [.eague, but
three teams shared the top spot
in the 10-13 year old division.
The Celtics edged the runner-
up Bucks 59-58 Thursday and
nipped the Spurs 72-70 Satur-
day. They finished with a 10-6
record, followed by the Bucks
9-7. Spurs 8-8 and Trail Blazers
6-10.
The ~ Téers, lakers: and
Rockets shared the 10-13 year
old crown, cach with 9-6 marks.
The Hawks and the Bulls finish-
ed 78 each.
Duke Hillman scored 16
points and Aubrey Hollifield 15
Thursday to lead the Celtics over
the Bucks. Jerry Jordan scored
28 points and Sidney Brown 13
for the losers.
In a game last Tuesday. the
Bulls edged the Hawks 60-56
Anthony Hillman scored 21
points, Julius Pagan 16 and Dar-
ron Schenck 14 for the winners.
Robbie Edgerton scored 19. left
Ross 14 and Tyrone Falls 13 for
the Hawks.
Ronnie Frazier = scored 23
points. Teddy Wilson 20 and
Don Adams 16 Saturday to lead
the Celtics over the Spurs. Travis
Crocker scored 22, Targe Wof-
ford 14 and Dennis Wofford 12
for the losers.
In another game Saturday, the
Bucks defeated the Trail Blazers
88-82. Jerry Jordan scored 28,
Derik Jordan 20 and Sam Smith
18 for the winners. Dean 1.ogan
had 23. Timi Wright 21 and Rich
‘Scruggs 17 for the Trail Blazers.

In another match, the
Southwood Strikers won three of
four games from the Duckpin
Demons. Jonathan Jones had a
93 line and 270 set for the win-
ners and Scott Myers had a 78
line and 228 set for the losers.
