Page 6A-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday, April 12, 1984 Golf Tourney To Aid Club The Kings Mountain Jaycees, in conjunction with the Kings Mountain Boys Club, will spon- sor the second annual Benefit Golf Tournament May 5-6 at Kings Mountain Country Club. All profits from the tourney will go to the Boys Club. Entry fee is $30 and includes green fees and a free practice round the week prior to the tour- nament. Entry deadline is Wednesday, May 2. Players will be flighted based on Saturday’s scorers and gift “certificates will be awarded to the top three places in each Men’s Softball Season Opens The men’s industrial slowpitch softball season will get underway Monday at City Stadium and Deal Street Park. Games will be played each Monday and Wednesday through June 27. Opening night action Monday at Deal Street includes Norick Brothers against Sadie Mills at 7 p.m., followed by Kinmont- Thermo-Welco and Spectrum- City of Kings Mountain. At City Stadium, Sulzer faces Reliance Electric at 6 p.m., followed by Foote Mineral-Clevemont and Park Yarn-Anvil Knit. Wednesday night at Deal Street, Clevemont plays Kin- mont at 7 p.m, followed by Sadie-Park Yarn and Thermo- Welco-Spectrum. Kings Mountain plays at South Point tonight and hosts East Gaston Friday afternoon. KMHS Track Team Fourth At East Gaston Kings Mountain High’s track team finished fourth .in a Southwestern 3-A Conference meet Thursday at East Gaston High School. The host Warriors won the event with 138 points, followed by Shelby with 88, Crest with 75, Kings Mountain with 53, East Rutherford with 48, South Point with 42, R-S Central with 35, Burns with 28, Chase with nine and North Gaston with seven. Jimmy Barrett picked up the only first place for the Moun- taineers, winning the 3200 run Junior High Whips Shelby Kings Mountain Junior High’s baseballers defeated Shelby 7-2 last week to run their Western Conference record to 2-1, Monte Deaton hurled the win and Charles Proctor led the KM hitting with a grand-slam home run. in 10:50.42 minutes. Monte Huffstetler took se- cond place in the 1600 meter run, Thompson was second in the pole vault and Calvin Stephens was second in the shot put. Arnold Jordan was fourth in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 400-meter run. Eddie Blanton tied for fourth in the high jump, Stephens was fourth in the discus and Walt Cooper was sixth in the triple jump. In a girls meet involving all | the SWC schools at East Gaston, the Kings Mountain girls finish- ed eighth. North Gaston won with 110% points, followed by Shelby 89, Crest 73, South Point 70, East Rutherford 70, R-S Central 56, Chase 32, Kings Mountain 29%, and East Gaston 22. Kings Mountain’s 1600 relay team finished first in 4:29 minutes. Tommy Batchler went the distance for the Mountaineers and took the loss despite giving up only five hits and striking out 10. The Cavaliers got a three-run homer from Tommy Smith in “the top of the third, but all three runs were unearned as an error with two outs opened the rally. Byrd singled following the error T-Ball Tryouts Slated Tryouts for seven and eight year olds who wish to play Tee Ball this summer will be held Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Deal Street ballpark (behind the Community Center). Any boy or girl who will be seven before August 1 is eligible to play. Kings Mountain scored in the third on singles by Johnny Yar- boro and Thomas Breakfield and a fielder’s choice. Richie Gold’s two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh cut the final margin to 4-3. Yarboro singled to open the rally but was erased at second on Rodney Ballew’s grounder. Breakfield and Yarboro had two hits each to lead the seven- hit KM plate attack. Kevin Echols and Jarvis Young added i singles. The Mountaineers had their other two games this week rain- ed out. Monday’s game with Shelby was scheduled to be made up Wednesday afternoon and Tuesday’s game at South Point has been re-scheduled for Thursday.
