Pa a Sr a aS, City Pleads ‘No Contest’ The city has plead “no contest” in a recent incident in which it allegedly violated codes of its waste water treatment per- mit and state laws by diverting spilled acid into McGill Creek. Walt Ollis, director of the city’s waste treatment program, said the city hopes that the N.C. Department of Natural Resources will reduce its $2,800 assessed penalty. He said that the decision to let the spill bypass the treatment plant was the best one under the circumstances. “We could not allow the spill in- to the treatment plant because it would have wiped out the biological process and took us weeks to get back into operation resulting in fines up to $10,000 a day.” He said the city has ex- plained their actions to en- vironmental management of- ficials. The chemical spill at Cleve- mont Mill last October, con- taminated water and killed fish in Crowder’s Creek, and Cleve- mont Mill was also fined $1,500 for negligence in discharging a hazardous substance, according to the notice of assessment of penalty sent to city and Cleve- mont officials in March. ALLISON CANDIDATE FOR CLEVELAND COUNTY COMMISSIONER (Democrat) Speaks Out On GOVERNMENT FUNDING Federal or State funding may be available for many services the county cannot afford easily- -such as countywide water and sewer systems and park facilities. If our research determines » a present or future need for these services, we should present our case to the appropriate agency in order to obtain our fair share of funding. Before new services are undertaken, we must do long-range cost studies to determine the eventual maintenance cost and/or retail price to the consumer/ taxpayer. YOUR SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED!
