OLLIE HARRIS Harris Ranked 11th Kings Mountain Senator Ollie Harris ranked 11th among 50 Senators in the annual effec- tiveness of ratings released this week by the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research. : The rankings are based on evaluations by legislators, lob- byists, and capital cor- respondents. Ran Coble, the center’s executive director, said legislators with seniority usually rank higher. Senator Marshall Rauch of Gastonia, also fo the 25th Senatorial District, was third in the upper houserankings, trailing only Senator Ken Royall of Durham County, the Senate Ma- jority Leader, and Senator Harold Hardison of Lenoir County. Senator Helen Rhyne Marvin, also of Gatonia and the 25th District, ranked 31st. Meeting Broad River Genealogical Society will meet Saturday at the Cleveland County Office Building on Post Road in Shelby across from the Fairgrounds. Registration gets underway at 8 a.m. and the meeting starts at 9 a.m. with a seminar which will continue until mid-afternoon. Registration is $7.50 for the seminar. Light lunch will be serv- ed at cost of $3.50. Kings Mountain Mayor John Moss will bring greetings. Mrs. Gault Hostess To Club Mrs. C.J. Gault was hostess April 11 to members of the Open Gate Garden Club at her home on Goforth Street. Upon arrival of the 16 members, Mrs. Gault served delicious dessert plate with cof- fee. Mrs. A.B. Hilton, program chairman, presented Miss Kim Cleary of Shelby, who gave the program entitled “Blue Birds of Happiness.” Miss Cleary presented a slide program done by the North Carolina Bluebird Society. The primary objective of the Society is to educate all bird lovers to the need of preser- ving birds. The flower arrangement done by Mrs. Gault titled “One of Our Blessings” received 95 points. The meeting closed with the Club Collect. Hay Fever Scheduled At Abbey Belmont - The Abbey Players of Belmont Abbey College will present “Hay Fever”, the season finale of their 100th season, "beginning Thursday, April 26 and running through Sunday, April 29. The production will be staged in the Haid Little Theatre on campus and all shows are at 8:00 p.m. Cost for students is $1.50 and adults is $4.00. The cast of “Hay Fever” is a mixture of students and faculty members from the Abbey. Par- ticipants are Alice Brown, Henry Buckley, Karen Campbell, Monica Costea, Bill Gareau, Paddy Hanner, Jody Johnson, Jean Moore and Eric Powell. Simon Donoghue, Director of Theatre, is the director of the play and student Joseph Hack is Stage Manager. a i i i i Scholarship Established For Students From County Gardner Webb College has announced the establishment of the LeGrand-Ware Scholarship to be awarded annually to an entering Gardner Webb freshman from Cleveland Coun- ty. The scholarship was establish- ed by Mr.and Mrs. R.T. LeGrand of Shelby in memory of their parents, Mr.and Mrs. Richard Torrence Le Grand, Sr. of Shelby and Mr. and Mrs. Moffatt Alexander Ware of Kings Mountain. The initial scholarship will be awarded this fall in the amount of $4800 to be divided equally over eight semesters. “Mr. and Mrs. LeGrand have long been strong advocates of education, the free enterprise system and Gardner Webb Col- lege,” said GW President Craven Williams in making the an- nouncement.“This generous scholarship appropriately reflects their interests and goes directly to the heart of a major nead for all private colleges. ” To qualify for the scholarship, students must have demonstrated a real interest in the free enterprise system-by taking high school courses relating to economics, conduc- ting self study projects, working at a paying job away from home or participating in the Junior Achievement Program. LeGrand, who is president of Jaydee,Inc. and past president of Artee - Industries, has served Gardner Webb since the mid 1960’s when he was appointed to the college board of advisors. Since then he has served several terms as an advisor and is currently chairman of the board’s finance and development committee and a member of the executive committee. He is also member of the board of directors of the college’s Broyhill Academy. Natives of Cleveland County, the LeGrands are both active in church and community affairs . Mrs. LeGrand is a member of the Shelby Junior Charity League and is the past president of the Shelby Presbyterian Women of the church. LeGrand has been active in the Shelby Lions club for a number of years and is a former elder of Shelby Presbyterian. Gardner Webb is a liberal arts colleg a ffiliated with the Bap- tist State Convention of N.C., offering associate, bachelor nad master’s degrees.
