Echols’ three-run homer in the The Mountaineers collected six hits off Dean Brown of the Lions. Echols had a two-run single to go with his three-run homer. The Mountaineers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in- ning when Thomas Breakfield homered over the leftfield fence. Shelby grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third, but Kings Mountain tied it at 2-all in the top of the fourth. The Moun- ~ Big First Inning Keys Crest Victory SPORTS Crest scored three runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers 6-1 in a Southwestern 3-A Conference baseball game Tuesday after- noon at Lancaster Field. The victory kept the Chargers atop the SWC’s Western Divi- sion standings. Kings Mountain, in last place in the Eastern Divi- sion, dropped to 4-7 in con- ference play. The Mounties close out their season by hosting South Point Friday afternoon and going to East Gaston Tues- day night. Leroy Spikes hurled a three- hitter to pick up the win Tues- day. Todd Cloninger started for the Mounties and took the loss. Jerry McDaniel relieved Clon- inger in the first and worked the rest of the game. Kings Mountain’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Thomas Breakfield walked, moved to second on a single by Richie Gold and scored when Brad Reynolds reached base on a fielder’s choice. Reynolds’ single and a double by Kent Boheler were the other two KM hits. Crest grabbed its 3-0 lead in the top of the first without benefit of a hit. After an error to open the ballgame, Cloninger walked three straight batters, forcing in the first run, and the other two scored on fielder’s choices. Photo by Gary Stewart coming week.
