‘Shrine 100 Race Slated
For Speedway On May 16
This year’s Shrine 100 auto
race at Carolina Speedway on
Union Road on Wednesday,
May 16, should be another star-
studded event.
The Gaston County Shrine
Club announced plans for the
race last week.
The program will get under-
way at 7 p.m., with the first heat
race at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the
event are $5 before the race, $6
the day of the race and $2 for
children.
The Shrine 100 is annually the
best-attended sporting event in
the county. Last year’s race, won
by Buck Simmons in the main
event, drew a crowd of 10,000
spectators to the dirt track.
Paul Armstrong, publicity
chairman, said the Shriners
donated close to $27,000 from
the event to the Shriners
Hospital for the crippled and
burned children in Greenville,
SiC.
Several other activities helped
the Gaston County Shriners
donate $48,000, a new record, to
the hospital for the year.
The Shrine 100 attracts the
top dirt track drivers from across
the Carolinas. A 30-lap, six-
cylinder modified race will be
held prior to the 40-lap Shrine
100 for late model sportsman
cars.
The Shrine 100 has been the
Gaston County Shrine Club’s
major project since 1973, when
Billy Scott won the initial race.
From 1956 through 1972, the
Shrine Club’s major project had
been hosting the NCAA regional
"baseball tournament at Sims
Park.
When the NCAA decided to
move the site, the idea of an auto
race provided a feasible means of
raising money for the Shrine
Club. It’s been a big hit every

the event - the second year in a
row they have been involved in
the race.

Team office in Denver, N.C.

decals.

rell Waltrip and Neil Bonnett
Budweiser show car to be on
display.
The first place winner in the
40-lap main event will receive
$1,600. There will be two heat
races, 10 laps each. In the
modified race, limited to a field
of 10 cars, the first place winner
