The clothes are smaller, usual ly simpler and speedy to sew “Little bodies are much less com plex in shape, sso you will have fewer fitting problems, says Dr. Judy Mock, extension human enviornment specialist, North Carolina State University. Add a little extra effort during so there will be less mending later. Reinforce the top corners of a patch pocket. Before attaching the pocket, iron on small squares of fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the garment. Or place a folded piece of seam bin ding on the wrong side of each pocket corner. Stitch the pocket in place, with a small triangle of stitches at each top corner. Vacations May Be Expensive Warm spring days has turned many minds to vacation. There are two basic problems with vacations: they tend to be expen- sive and are quickly over. Families on tight budgets may not be able to manage a week at the beach or mountains, but recreation need not be ignored, says Dr. Thelma Hinson, exten- sion family resource manage- ment specialist, North Carolina State University. “Low cost recreation is as available as one’s imagination and talents”, says the specialist. “It is needed to chase the blues, boredom, stress and fatigue and to provide pleasure.” Take 60 second vacations from your routine. Change ac- tivity or position every one or two hours. “A quick, deep stretch or vigorous exercise can be most refreshing and relaxing to body and mind,” Dr. Hinson says. Staying at home can be an art. Dr. Hinson suggests establishing a family night. “Let different family members develop new recreational ideas for the family.” Develop the skill of campfire cooking and use it in the backyard and on trips. This sort of family meal helps the budget. Encourage the children to scout the community and sur- rounding area for interesting things to do and see on one day trips. Consider a tour and study of trees, plants, rocks, minerals, industries, parks and historical areas. Attend special events, festivals and programs in the area. Share the cost and use of more expensive recreational equip- ment.
