Smiths Attend Show
Mr. and Mrs. Odus Smith, Jr.,
owners of the local Western
Auto Associate Store, have just
returned from Dallas, Texas
where they attended Western
Auto’s International Merchan-
dise Show.
New lines of merchandise for
auto, home and leisure were on
display in over 700 booths at the
annual show, which was held
this year in The Dallas Conven-
tion Center.
Featured at the Show were
such nationally known brand
names as Magnavox TV, Tap-
pan ranges, Coleco Video
Games, Norge Appliances, Fram
and Purolator filters, Monroe
shocks, Champion and AC
Delco spark plugs, Kraco sound,
Prestone anti freeze, Wilson
sporting goods, Poulan Chain
Saws, Briggs and Stratton,
Western Flyer Bikes and scores
of others. Much of this brand
name merchandise will be stock-
ed at the Western Auto Store.
The Smiths attended the show

In Team Spirit 1984
Air Force Sgt. John O.
Timms, son of Penny Guthrie
and stepson of William E.
Guthrie of Route 2, Bessemer
City, has participated in Team
Spirit 1984.
This is the largest joint, com-
bined field training exercise to be
held in the free world this year.
A joint, combined exercise in-
volves more than one service
from more than one country.
Team Spirit 1984, the eighth
annual exercise of its kind, in-
volves the deployment, recep-
tion and employment of U. S.
and Republic of Korea forces
responding to possible con-
tingencies in the Korean
Theatre.
Staged in South Korea, the
purpose of Team Spirit is to exer-
cise, evaluate and improve pro-
cedures and techniques to be

unit training at the U. S.Army
Infantry School, Fort
Benning,Ga. \
OSUT is a 12-week period
which combines basic combat
training and advanced individual
training.
The training included
weapons qualifictions, squad tac-
tics, patrolling, landmine war-

‘ fare, field communications and
‘combat operations. Completion
of this course qualifies the
soldier as a light-weapons infan-
tryman and as an indirect-fire
crewman.
Soldiers were taught to per-
form any of the duties in a rifle
or mortar squad.
He is a 1982 graduate of
Bessemer City High School.

Marine Pfc. Garland T.
Johnson, son of Mary Johnson
of Route 1, Grover,has com-
pleted recruit training at the
Marine Corps Recruit Depot,
Parris Island,S.C.
During the 11-week training
cycle, he learned the basics of
battlefield survival. He was in-
troduced to the typical daily
routine that he will experience
during his enlistment and
studied the personal and profes-
sional standards traditonally ex-
hibited by Marines.
He participated in an active
physical conditioning program
and gained proficiency in a varie-
ty of military skills, including
first aid, rifle meaksmaship and
close order drills. Teamwork and
self-discipline were emphasized
throughout the training cycle.

Airman Rodger W. Taylor, son
of Alan R. Taylor of Lincolnton
and Chlyoko T. Griffin of
Bessemer City, has been assigned .
to Brooks AFB, Texas, after
completing Air Force basic train-
ing.
During the six weeks at
Lackland Air Force Base, Texas,
the airman studied the Air Force
mission, organization and
customs and received special in-
struction in human relations.
In addition, airmen who com-
plete basic training earn credits
toward an associate degree in ap-
plied science through the Com-
munity College of the Air Force.
The airman will now receive
specialized instruction in the en-
vironmental medicine field.
He is a 1977 graduate of
Bessemer City High School.

Timms is a security specialist
with the 313th Air Division at
Kadens Air Base, Okinawa,

He is a 1979 graduate of
Bessemer City High School.
