May 31, 1984 Bryan Jones Wins Clemson Tennis Tourney Bryan Jones of Kings Moun- tain won the Clemson Tiger Junior Tennis Championship in the Boys 14-year-old division May 25-27 at Clemson Universi- ty. Jones, 5th-8th seeded alphabetically, defeated Brett Howell of West Union, S.C., 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. In the second round, he won over Dave Garner of Greenville, S.C., 6-3, 6-2. In the third round he defeated the number one-ranked player from Alabama, Matt McKelvain, who was seeded third in the tournament. After being down five games to one in the third set and having eight match points against him, Jones came back to win in a tie- breaker, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6. In the semi-finals, he upset the number one seed in the tourney, Jim Rogerson of Wilson, who is the returning number two- ranked player in the South, 6-3, 6-3. In the finals, Jones whipped John Yancey of Morganton, the number four seed who earlier seed, Joe Frierson of Atlanta. The score was 6-2, 6-2. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jones of Kings Moun- tain, is 13 years old and an eighth grader at Kings Mountain Junior High School, where he % helped lead that school’s tennis team to its first ever Western : North Carolina Association Championship this spring. Cutting Horse Show Set Here Saturday There will be a cutting horse show Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at the Circle B Quarterhorse Farm (Charlie Bridges’ farm) across from the Kings Mountain Saddle Club on Putnam Lake Road. Seventy to ninety entries from North and south Carolina, Georgia and Virginia are ex- pected in five different classes, Tennis Lessons Available Here Tennis lessons for boys and girls in grades one through eight will be taught June 12-22 at the Kings Mountain High School tennis courts. Instructors will be Kathy James and Barbara Jones. Basic fundamentals will be taught. Each student is required - to bring a tennis racket. Tennis balls will be furnished. There will be a limit of 16 students in the first and second grade class and a limit of 20 students in the other classes. During the last’'week of classes; a tournament will © be “held ‘and trophies presented to the win- ners. An exhibition match between ~ two stateranked players will be held during the weeks. Classes for rising first and se- cond graders will be held from © 9-10 am., for third through * eighth graders from 10 a.m. until noon, and for third through eighth graders from 1-3 p.m. Cost is. $15 for first-second graders and $20 for third-eighth graders. Cubs Win In T-Ball The Cubs posted a pair of lop- sided wins last week as t-ball ac- tion got underway at Deal Street Park. The Cubs defeated the dodgers 35-11 Thursday night and whipped Parkdale 26-14 Saturday. In another game Thursday, the Mets defeated Parkdale22-10. Sharee Hopper slammed four home runs to lead the Cubs over the Dodgers Thursday. David Jenkins also homered for the winners. Paul Leigh and James -Rippy homered for the Dodgers. Brian Leftwich and Shane Johnson scored four runs each to lead the Mets over Parkdale Thursday. Jennifer Sisk homered for the losers. Chad Swann scored five runs to lead the Cubs over Parkdale Saturday. A’s Take Over First The Kings Mountain A’s took over sole possession of first place in the Charlotte Semi-Pro baseball league Saturday night by defeating previously undefeated 2-C Rangers 4-3. Mike Featherstone was the winning pitcher for the A’s, now 13-1. The A’s defeated the Charlotte Bombers 8-5 Sunday with Roy Mathis picking up the _ win. The A’s host Oak Ridge, S.C., Saturday at Davidson Park. Sun- day, the A’s travel to Charlotte to play the Westside Eagles. including open, non- professional, 5,000dimited non- professional, 3,000-novice horse and 1,500-novice horse. Cutting horses are horses that work cows. The show is sponsored by the Wateree Cutting Horse Associa- tion and sanctioned by the Na- tional Cutting Horse Associa- tion. Admission is free. A conces- sion stand will be in operation.
