June 7. 1984 Kings Mountain High Wins Wachovia Cup Kings Mountain High School edged county rival Shelby by one-half point to win the Wachovia Cup for the Southwestern 3-A Conference during the 1983-84 school year. The Wachovia Cup, formerly called the All-Sports Trophy, is given by Wachovia Bank each year to the schoo: in the con- ference which compiles the best record in all sports. In previous years of competi- tion, the Mountaineers finished second to East Gaston twice and second to Shelby once. The Mountaineers compiled 90 and one-half points to 90 for Shelby. R-S Central was third with 84 and one-half points and Crest was fourth with 83 and one-half. South Point was fifth with 76 and one-half, followed by East Gaston, 71 one-half, North Gaston 66, East Ruther- ford 58, Chase 52 and Burns 36 and one-half. The Mountaineers did not win a championship during the year, but finished second in several sports, including girls softball, wrestling, girls tennis and cross country. The Mountaineers were third in football, fourth in both boys and girls basketball and fifth in track. The Mounties finished in the top five in 12 of the 14 sports they participated in. The Mountaineers were also well-represented on the spring sports all-conference teams an- nounced Friday by Gerald Allen, SWC secretary. Senior standout Melinda Roberts was named Player of the Year in softball and was joined on the allconference team by four of her teammates. Roberts hit over .500 and played well defensively in the outfield to help lead Coach Bruce Clark’s girls to a 19-3 record and the Eastern Division title. She led the team in runs batted in and home runs. Junior Brad Jones and senior Jeff Barnette, who became the - first KM doubles team to qualify for the state tournament, represented the ‘Mountaineers on the all-conference tennis team. Photo by Gary Stewart PLAYER OF THE YEAR-Melinda Roberts of Kings Mountain High was voted player of the year in softball in the Southwestern 3-A Conference for this season. Roberts hit over .500 and led the Mountainettes in home runs and runs batted in. Joining Roberts on the all- conference team were Melanie Herndon, pitcher; Becky Bolt, first baseman; Pat Davis, second baseman; and Tippy Curry, cat- cher. Susan Grayson of Crest was coach of the year. Others on the all-conference team were pitcher Robbie Taylor of league champion Chase, cat- cher Angie Martin of Chase, first baseman Donna Hayes of Chase, second baseman Michelle McGraw of North Gaston, shortstops Tina Elmore of East Rutherford and Tina Harbison of Crest and Pam Kirland of North Gaston, third basemen Susan Metcalf of Chase, and Sherry Hope of North Gaston, and outfielders Kim Bailes of Burns, Tracy Forston of Crest, Tonya Sanford of East Ruther- ford, Terry Switzer of Sheélby™ and Lisa Houser of Chase. Second baseman Richie Gold and outfielder Brad Reynolds represented Kings Mountain High on the allconference baseball team. Reynolds, a senior, led the Mountaineers in hitting with a .304 batting average and played a strong defensive leftfield for - Coach David Heffner. He was voted the team’s most valuable player. Gold, a junior, was one of the league’s top defensive players and was also among the team’s leading hitters. Ed Guy, who closed out an outstanding coaching career by leading KM’s boys tennis team to a third place finish in the SWC, was voted co-coach of the year along with Art Moss of Shelby. The local nine, 0-4 going into last night’s game here against Hickory, will return home Satur- day to host Morganton. Hickory comes to Lancaster Field Mon- day. Post 155 fell victim of a no- hitter by Lenoir’s Don Phillips here last Thursday night. Phillips fanned 13 and allowed only two baserunners. Richie Gold walked in the second inning and Robin Griffin drew a walk in the sixth." Lenoir pounded Todd Clon- inger and Marty Bridges for 10 hits in the 10-0 victory. Clon- inger worked the first six innings and took the loss. After the first four games, Post 155 has committed 20 er- rors and KM batters have been fanned 46 times. Kevin Echols leads the club in hitting with a 437 average and Todd Clon- KEVIN ECHOLS inger’s hitting .333, but no other KM player is hitting over .235. Kings Mountain held an 8-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, when Shelby scored five runs to tie the game. The Post 82 team scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on an error to win its second straight game and hand Kings Mountain its third straight defeat. Mike Bess of Bessemer City started for Post 155 and left after seven innings with an 8-3 lead. Marty Bridges came on in the bottom of the eighth and took the loss. Keith Bridges claimed the vic- tory. He pitched four and two- - thirds innings of relief, giving up just two hits and striking out six. Kings Mountain struck for three runs in the fourth off Shelby starter Dean Brown to take a 5-2 lead. An error and singles by Richie Gold and Todd Cloninger sparked the rally. Post 155 added three more runs in the fifth to grab an 8-2 lead. Robin Griffin’s single plated two of the runs and the other run came on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Echols. The first place fundraising team was the Saunders Thread women’s team, raising $414 in collected donations.
