Mack Gains 141 Yards, Scores Twice In L.A. Win Kings Mountain’s Kevin Mack rushed for 141 yards and scored on runs of one and 71 yards sunday to lead the Los Angeles Express to a 35-21 United States Football League victory over Washington. The victory moved the Ex- press into a tie for first place in the Pacific Division of the Western conference. Los Angeles and Denver share the top spot with 8-7 records, foll- owed by Arizona at 7-8 and Oakland at 6-9. Mack got a late start with the Express and had been used primarily as a backup fullback until Sunday. Mack signed with L.A. in April after leading the Clemson Tigers in rushing last fall. He is living in L.A., but ex- pects to return to Kings Moun- tain for the summer. vv ed ig A | | KEVIN MACK Jaycees, Rotary, Lions Jaycees, Rotary and Lions won two games apiece in Dixie Youth Major League baseball action during the past week at Deal Street Park. In action last Wednesday night, the Jaycees defeated Kiwanis 11-2, Rotary outscored STUART SPIRES Spires In State Finals Stuart Spires, of Kings Moun- tain, has advanced to the State Finals in; the, 1984 Hershey's Na- tional Track .and, Field.Youth Program. He will participate in the 1600 Meter Run and the Standing Long Jump in the boys 13 and 14 year old age division at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh on July 12. In the State meet, Stuart will compete with 17 other regional winners for a four-day, all ex- pense paid trip to the national finals in Hershey, Pa., to be held the second week in August. Stuart placed second in both of these events at the Hershey's Regional meet at Shelby High School on Sat., June 2. He was the only participant from Kings Mountain in the Cleveland County event. The Youth Program, spon- sored by Hershey Foods Cor- poration, emphasizes the friend- ship, sportsmanship and physical aspects of track and field as much, if not more, than it em- phasizes competition. The Na- tional Program, now in its seventh year, is open to all boys and girls ages 9-14 and is con- ducted through local parks and recreation departments. Stuart, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Millage Spires, is a rising eighth grader and is a member of the Kings Mountain Junior High track team. BB&T Winner In T-Ball BB&T scored a pair of vic- tories in T-Ball play during the past week at Deal Street Park. BB&T defeated the Cubs 13-11 last Tuesday night and whipped Parkdale 29-5 Monday. In another game Tuesday, Pat- terson Oil defeated, Parkdale 22-10 and on Monday, the Cubs defeated the Mets 19-8. Kevin Melton and Caji Or- man slammed a pair of home runs each and Kenny Bunch ad- ded a homer to lead BB&T over Parkdale Monday. Chad Swann scored four runs to lead the Cubs over the Mets. Kevin Melton and Caji Or- mand scored runs in the fourth inning to break an 11-all tie and lead BB&T over the Cubs last week. Brandon Putnam homered for the Cubs..i« 0.“ Cedric Moore hit a homerun - and scored five runs to lead Pat- terson Oil over Parkdale. Bobby Peterson homered for Parkdale. C&C Metal 8-5 and Plonk Oil blanked the Lions 4-0. On Thurs- day night, Rotary trimmed the Jaycees 5-3 and the Lions edged Kiwanis 4-2. On Monday night, the Lions whipped Rotary 7-3 and the Jaycees defeated C&C 6-1. Ronnie Carroll went 2-for-3, including a home run, and also hurled the victory Wednesday as the Jaycees outslugged Kiwanis. Tripp Slycord was 3-for4, in- cluding a triple, and Kevin Parker was 2-for-3. Jay Richard- son’s double was the big blow for the losers. Paul Brannon slammed two homeruns and John Reid hit a homer to lead Rotary over C&C. Rodney Ross hurled the win. Ryan Hollifield and Daniel Honeycutt had two hits each for the losers. Unbeaten Plonk Oil scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning to blank the Lions. Chad Plonk’s home run was the big blow for the winners. Whittington had a double for the losers. Rotary scored two runs in the sixth inning to trim the Jaycees 5-3 Thursday. Consecutive singles by Paul Brannon, Rusty Burgess and Todd Reynolds brought home the winning runs. John Reid hurled the win. Jody Richardson’s double was the big blow for the losers. The Lions scored three runs in Win In Major League the sixth inning to edge Kiwanis 4-2 Thursday. Greene and Cash homered for the winners and Carroll hit a homer for Kiwanis. The Lions scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Rotary 7-3 Monday. Forrest and Whittington each had two hits for the winners, and both of them had run-scoring doubles in the four-run sixth inn- ing rally. Reid and Runyans had two hits each for Rotary. The Jaycees scored five runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and defeat C&C 6-1 Monday. Bullock, Sisk, and Withers had doubles to spark the rally. Bridges’ triple was the big blow for the losers. Contact The Rest; Then Call The Best Don’t Move Improve Charlie Foster, Keeter Hamrick and Mike Seawright, all of Kings Mountain, will com- pete June 10 on High Rock Lake in the fourth Carolina Division event on the Red Man Tourna- ment Trail. Among the nearly 200 com- petitors will be 23 of the top 24 anglers in the Carolina Division point standings, Foster is cur- rently fourth in the point stan- dings. Anglers will be vying for about $7,500 in prize money, with the winner earning about $2,500. Cash awards go to the top 10 percent of the field. The fifth tournament is scheduled for July 8 on Wateree Lake near Camden, S.C. Entry deadline is June 27. Three Winners In Minor Loop Plonk Oil, the Yankees, and the Vitamin Bees were winners in Dixie Youth Minor League baseball action last week at Deal Street Park. Plonk edged the Vitamin Bees 8-7, the Yankees defeated the Optimist Club 74 and the Bees whipped the Yankees 124. Singles by Mike Smith, Steve Parker, Steve Fisher and Harold Black spared a four-run fifth inn- ing rally which lifted Plonk Oil over the Bees. Parker led the winners at the bat with 2-for-3. Jenkins had a double for the losers. Bell slammed a triple and Heavner and Jones added singles to lead the Yankees over Op- timist. Wood had a double and Putnam, Rogers and Roberts ad- ded singles for the losers. Roberts had a double and single and McClain added a dou- ble to lead the Bees over the Yankees.
