Program Approximately 350 students and teachers gathered recently in Raleigh for North Carolina CLOSE UP. Area represen- tatives who were among the par- ticipants included Chris Huff- stetler, David Pervine, Mike Reynolds, Brenda Wright and their teacher coordinater, Dean Westmoreland, all of Kings Mountain Senior High School. North Carolina “Close Up” began in 1978. It is an educa- tional program which was designed to allow students and their techers to interact with state officials, legislators, representatives from the news media, lobbyist organizations, etc. through panel discussions, seminars, debates, question and answer sessions, etc. The pro- gram is modeled after the highly successful National Close Up program which provides oppor- tunities for teachers and students to use Washington, D.C. as a classroom in the same manner that Raleigh is used for the North Carolina program. Some of the elected and ap- pointed leaders of North Carolina who addressed the ma- jor issues facing our state and a ‘Miss Donna Caveny, whose wedding to Lane Logan took place Saturday, was honored recently at a bridal drop-in in the Fellowship Hall of Kings Moun- tain Baptist Church. Entertaining together were BRENDA WRIGHT how their particular branch or department of state government approaches these issues were: Secretary of State Thad Eure, Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Graham, State Superinten- dent of Education A. Craig Phillips, Associate Justices of the State Supreme Court James Ex- um and Henry Frye, Rep. Harold Brubaker and Senator Roxanne Mauney. Sarah Rhea, Kim Tate, Mimi Mercier, Cindy Gillespie, and Laura Flowers. The 20 guests showered the bridelect with miscellaneous household gifts. The pink and white theme of Harold Hardison. Other speakers presented the State Auditor’s Office, the Depart- ments of Labor, Human Resources, Revenue, Cultural Resources, Commerce and Cor- rections, and the Attorney- General’s office. Several exciting debates were conducted. David Price from the North Carolina Democratic Par- ty and Barbara Machada with - the North Carolina Republican Party debated the merits of their respective parties. W.W. Finlator and the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham debated the issue of prayer in schools. North Carolina “Close Up” is now in its seventh year of opera- tion. It is governed and operated by a working advisory commit- tee of teachers and ad- ministrators from the North Carolina schools systems and by the Social Studies Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Approximately 140 high schools including the North Carolina School for the Deaf participated in this year’s pro- gram. R.J. Reynolds, Inc. provides partial funding for this program. Donna the wedding was beautifully . featured in decorations and refreshments. Miss Caveny was presented a corsage of pink silk roses to wear with her party dress.
