July 5. 1984-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 7B by REV. FRED WELLS , PASTOR, MIDVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH Ira Stanphill wrote a song that I believe is the key to awakening us to truly live. It was entitled, “But I Know Who Holds My Hand.” Let us look at a part of this song: I don’t know about tomorrow, I just live from day to day, I don’t borrow. from its sun- shine, For it’s skies may turn to gray. Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand, But I know who holds tomor- row, and I know who holds my hand! Knowing that Christ holds the first place in our lives, we need to heed what Paul wrote to the Eph. 5:14, “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.” We don’t want to drive a car when it is not firing on all cylinders for it does not have the power to perform properly, neither do we perform for our REV. FRED WELLS Lord properly if we continue to sleep, neglecting to study, to pray, and put in practice that knowledge which God has given us. Years ago Marcus Aurelius said, “Do not act as if you had a thousand years in which to live.” Misused or unused talents do not bring real satisfying life. It has been estimated that the ma- jority of people use only one tenth of their mental potential. Use Your Talents We wonder if that would not hold true of our spiritual possibilities. Indeed, most of us need to wake up and live a more abundant life! People who are asleep are in- sensible both to the dangers and possibilities of life. Sometimes God must permit trials and dif- ficulties to come upon us to awaken us as to where we stand in our Christian life and point us to what we need to do. : Too often we spend our time in just “doing good” instead of doing our best. We cry that we don’t have time, yet spend countless hours doing secondary things. That’s why Paul was say- ing to the Eph., “Awake thou that sleepest” for that was a need in that day and today. To awake is not enough but requires action. When Paul said “Arise From The Dead.” This means to do that which is positive for is we know what to do but have the will to fail, we cannot be successful in anything. How can we wake up and live? First we must want to. The master asked blind Bartimaeus “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?” He answered, “Lord that I might receive my sight.” He was specific. He knew what he wanted: so must we! When we can say as the song writer wrote, “And I know who holds my hand,” then we can know with assurance that God can truly use us and when once we have learned how to wake up and live, we must “act as if it were impossible to fail!” To keep mentally and spiritually awake we need to keep going. Freezing men are tempted to rest and sleep, but their only hope of sur- vival is to keep moving. We don’t know about tomor- row, but Jesus said, “I am the vine. Ye are the branches.” Our power is not in ourselves but in Jesus, so we need not worry about tomorrow but live today according to the light Jesus gives us. The challenge in Eph. 5:14 is awake, arise, and we have the promise of God’s Word that Christ shall give thee light. Let God hold your hand and wake up and live today. McDOWELL PIANO TUNER AND REPAIR 501 Mitchell Street Phone 739-6872 Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086 Irving Mond To Speak At Brotherhood Meeting Irving Mond of Charlotte, who survived Adolph Hitler’s Holocaust, will be guest speaker at the Men’s Brotherhood meeting at First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. ‘ The public is invited to attend. Mond was a youngster during the Holocaust and saw his parents and other relatives and friends tortured and killed by the Nazis. He spent time in German concentration camps. Mond is one of six Charlot- teans who survived the Holocaust and who are now tell- ing their stories and warning the 4 public that there are signs of a return to the ‘inhuman behavior’ that led to the Holocaust. Don Mariaschin, assistant na- tional director of the Jewish Anti-Defamation League who spoke at a memorial service to over 50 Holocaust survivors in Charlotte recently, said some of those signs are the continuing struggles of some Arab nations against Israel; international ter- rorism sponsored by such na- tions as Syria, Iran, Libya, and North Korea; human rights violations in Argentina; and the Soviet Union’s oppression of Eastern Europe and Jews and other groups inside Russia. “If Israel’s enemies succeed in their objective, Hitler's work would be finished,” he said. “In- ternational terrorism is the new Hitlerism. And it must be stop- ped now. Then it was Hitler. To- day, it might be Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi.” Over six million Jews and five million Gentiles—mostly gypsies and Poles, were baked, gassed, suffocated, starved, stabbed and shot to death by the Nazis dur- ing the Holocaust.
