Phone 629-2468 Low Down Payment - Easy Pay Plan By ERIC FAUST Pastor, First Presbyterian Church On a cold day in December 1 was standig by the tripod holding up the galvanized bucket. I was idly clanging the cheap bell that was used to at- tract attention to the bucket, to the sign that proclaimed in rather dingy letters: “Helping Hand Fund.” The bucket was there for people to toss money into which would be used by the Kings Mountain Ministerial. Association to play a small part in the funding of the Food Bank at the Community Center. This Food Bank is used to help pro- vide food help for families who need a helping hand; and ap- plications may be obtained through most local ministers. As I stood there, wishing peo- ple a Merry Christmas or a good evening, and making a shivering attempt to look cheerful, an observation was made. The large majority of the people just walk- ed righ on past, eyes looking away, mumbling a Merry Christmas in response, but hur- rying on into the store or out to the car in the parking lot. So few participated in giving. So few are able to catch a larger vision and concept of extending the strong hand of care and blessing. In- terested? Did you know that in the first six months of 1984 the Food Bank has served almost as many people as it did in the whole of 1983? Did you know that double the money has not come in to purchase the food. Folks, we are talking between 2,000 and 4,000 per month. Interested? Contact a local minister who is a member of the Kings Mountain Ministerial Association. o0o A friend and I were talking about the convenience of abor- tion for the girls and women who are inconveniently preg- nant. To be sure there are cer- tain eternal consequences that must be addressed, but the real heart of our conversation developed when the. question was posed, “What is the Chris- tian alternative to abortion?” Needless to say if some sort of moral integrity, some sort of value of relationship had been a foundation for living, the pregnancy would not have hap- pened. And even though it did, it is not the unforgiveable malady which the self-righteous like to impose. That wasn’t the question of our discussion either, although it too should be ad- dressed. The question “What is the Christian alternative to abor- tion?” continues to be asked, to- day. The Christian and the Christian church are very slow in answering. I believe that the answer is one of great commitment and service in the Name of Jesus Christ; an answer that would be manifest in several directions. What if there were a network of Christian homes set up especially for the care of these mothers-in- waiting, yet who have been re- jected from their own homes, or whose home environment is unhealthy...? What if there were Christian families willing to take in a pregnant young teen? What if there were a Christian family willing to take in an abused wife, pregnant again but scared to return to the brutality of so- called husband? What if there Info System Developed For Self-Help Groups Raleigh- The North Carolina Department of Human Resources is now developing a comprehensive statewide infor- mation system about self help/nmutual support groups in North Carolina in order to pro- vide better communication and faster local assistance to citizens in need of help. Representatives from all self help/mutual support groups throughout the state are asked to call Janie Hinson toll-free at CARELINE (1-800-662-7020) and provide her with the latest information about their various’ groups. Self help/nutual support is a grass roots volunteer movement designed to provide emotional and psychological support to in- dividuals undergoing crisis in their lives, according to Rose Kittrell, a program consultant in the Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and * Substance Abuse Services’ Office _of Prevention.
