Minors To Compete Kings Mountain’s Dixie Youth Minor League allstars (nine and 10 year olds) will com- pete in the District Tournament July 21-25 at the East Lincoln Optimist Park. Steve Goforth is coach of the KM entry. He is assisted by Phillip Putnam and Pete Burgess. Kings Mountain will battle . Bessemer City Saturday at 4 p.m. If KM wins, it will play again Sunday at 6 p.m. If the KM all-stars lose, they will play Sunday at 2 p.m. In other opening round games Saturday, Chapel Grove will play West Lincoln at 2 p.m. Dallas faces East Lincoln at 6 p.m. and Grover meets Tryon at 8 p.m. coaches Jerry Jenkins, Steve Goforth, To get to the East Lincoln park, take Highway 216 to Cher- ryville, and then Highway 150 to Lincolnton. In Lincolnton take Highway 27 east to Highway 73. On 73, take a left to Highway 16. Take a left on Highway 16. About two miles, there will be a sign on the right which reads “East Lincoln Optimist Park.” Take a left at the sign and the park will be on the left. Registration Set -Kings Mountain Optimist Club will begin registering players for its Pop Warner foot- ball program August 1, 2 and 3 at City Stadium. Pre-season practice is schedul- ed to begin on August 6. League play will begin in early September. Registration ‘is from 5 to 7 p.m. each day. The Optimist Club will field three teams this year. Youngsters ages eight, nine and 10 who weigh no more than 85 pounds are eligible to play for the junior pee wees; youngsters ages nine, 10 and 11 who weigh no more than 100 pounds are eligible to play for the pee wees; and youngsters ages 10, 11 and 12 who weigh no more than 115 pounds are eligible to play for Cancer Golf Tourney Set In Cherryville The Cherryville Country Club has set Thursday, August 9, as the date for the Gaston Unit American Cancer Society Golf Championship Tournament. Chairman Carl Dellinger ex- plained that the event will be held at Cherryville Country Club and is open to men and women. Teams may enter in the handicap or scratch division. In addition, persons wishing to par- ticipate as individuals will do so in flights: Tee times will be assigned, morning and after- noon. Winning teams will be eligible to represent Gaston County in the State Tournament Labor Day weekend at Bay Tree Plantation in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Scoring for the event is on a best ball of the foresome basis. KM Women Win Handicap Golf Tourney Ann Withers, Peggy Jackson and Doris Cloninger won their flights in the Kings Mountain Ladies Golf Association Han- dicap Tournament July 7-8 at Kings Mountain Country Club. Others participating were Phyllis Corn, Suzie Howard, Elaine Grigg, Julia Timms, Heidi McDaniel and Margie Yancey. The Kings Mountain Ladies Invitational will be played July 24 at- KMCC. Golfers from KMCC, Riverbend, Cleveland Country Club, Cherryville Country Club, Woodbridge and Gastonia Municipal will be par- ticipating. Players are urged to register at the KMCC pro shop. Arnold Jordan Signs With Lees-McRae Lees-McRae College head basketball coach, Carlisle Hostetter, has announced that Majors From Page 5-A lead in the top of the fifth. But Bessemer scored two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to win it. Ronnie Carroll took the loss for Kings Mountain. After the error-plagued first inning, he allowed only two baserunners until the bottom of the fifth. Chad Plonk was the only KM player with two hits. Chris Plonk, Chip Cash, Carroll and Paul Brannon had one hit each. Arnold Jordan (6’1'4”, 165 Ibs.) has signed a grant-in-aid to play basketball for the Bobcats. He is the son of Ms. Jean E. Bell of Kings Mountain. Jordan played his high school basketball for Coach Larry Sipe at Kings Mountain Senior High School, where he was an all- conference performer in the tough 3A Southwest Con- ference. He averaged 14 points and 6 assists during his senior year, and was named MVP by his teammates. “Arnold is a very unselfish player,” stated Hostetter. “He handles the ball well and is an excellent defensive player. He will be an asset to our program.” the junior midgets. Last season, all three KM teams finished above .500 and third in their respective divi- sions.
