Racing On Tap From Page 4 300 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in October. Doug Osteen of Woodruff, S.C., the track point leader, will be trying to regain his supremacy in the late model class, which has been stiffly challenged in recent weeks. Osteen leads the late model division in wins with eight, but has managed only one feature win in the last nine races, with that victory coming last Friday night. During that string of nine races, Ernie Irvan of Concord, N.C. has won four times, while veterans Hayward Plyler of Kannapolis, N.C. and Buck Sim- mons of Baldwin, Ga. have visited victory lane two times each. Young Irvan, a transplanted Californian, led only one lap in winning Saturday night, beating Plyler to finish line by less than a car length. Other late model winners at Concord this season have been Gary Balough, Mike Duvall, Wayne Sharpe, Freddie Smith and Tim Gordon. Doug Efird and Phil Nye will each put winning streaks on the line this weekend. Efird, a 15-race winner at Concord this year, will be shooting for his 10th win in a row in the hobby division. Nye, a nine-time win- ner in ‘84, will be after his fourth straight in the semi modified class.
