Social Notes By Lib Stewart Bertie Stewart plans a big reunion this weekend with her 27-year-old niece, Melissa Hopkins, whom she has not seen since Melissa was a small girl and adopted by a family from Quanah, Texas. Wednesday, the Stewart family met Melissa Jan (who' was born Charlene Anne Carpenter, daughter of Winona Bailey Carpenter, now of Chicago, Ill., and the late Charlie P. Carpenter, Jr., of Kings Moun- tain) at Douglas Airport. It was a tearful, happy reunion for Bertie an her whole family. Melissa Jan will be reunited with many Carpenter and Stewart relatives she has never seen this Sunday when the descendants, relatives and friends of Charles P. and Bright McClure Carpenter gather for a family reunion at Oak Grove Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Bertie said that everyone will bring a picnic basket and the meal will be served at 1 p.m. Melissa Jan will visit other relatives in town and in Stanley, says Bertie, and will also be reunited with a sister who is coming from Utah for the family get-to-gether. The five Carpenter children were raised by different families, except Melissa and her brother, Jay, who were rais- ed together in the small town of Quanah, Texas, population 5,000. When Bertie Stewart’s telephone rang this past Mother’s Day it was a call she had prayed for about 25 years. The caller was 27-year-old Melissa Jan Hopkins whom Mrs. Stewart had lost contact with. Melissa had located her aunt by reading a copy of the Carpenter history book, “Carpenter’s Aplenty” which was published recently. As this column was written on Monday, Bertie Stewart was very ex- . cited about seeing her niece after a quarter of a century. “I just can hardly wait”, she beamed.
