Bus No. 44, State Roads - Hibraty Noteg Summer Program End At Mauney Library BY ROSE TURNER Have you ever tried to move your right hand back and forth like a ticking clock, your left hand up and down like a yo-yo, your right foot up and down like a wooden shoe, your hips around and around like a spinn- ing top, and then rock back and _ forth like a rocking chair—simoltaneously? It’s quite difficult, but fifty four children tried it as we played the game, “My Aunt Came Back,” at the birthday party for North Carolina on August 2, which ended the summer programs at the Mauney Memorial Library. The party featured games relating to the summers ac- tivities, and a large cake with a picture of North Carolina drawn in frosting on the top. Fifty four of the children who participated in the summer reading club at- tended the party and received their certificates. The children were enthuiastic about the summer program and commented on the things they had learned. Nickie Jackson said, “I liked all of the things in the summer reading program but the things I liked best were reading, hearing stories about North Carolina, studying North Carolina, and studying geneology. Now because we are studying aout geneology, my brother, cousin, and I are going deeper into our family, because after you start studying geneology it gets interesting and you can’t quit.” Jimmy Thompson and Jason Rayfield also looked up some of their family history in the Carolina Room. However, their favorite activities were the stories about North Carolina. Jason said, “I liked all of it, but I liked the legends best. Brady Jackson said he especially liked learning about famous ghosts of North Carolina, as in the stories of the Maco Light, and the Brown Mountain Lights. Jimmy said, “I liked all we did, but especially when the ghost came out of the closet.” He was referr- ing to the program on ghosts, when the headless ghost of Joe Baldwin burst out of the closet, swinging his lantern, and looking for his head. The summer program was a success, not only in terms of the number of children reached, but also in terms of the enthuisiasm of the children who participated in the learning activities which focused on North Carolina. 2235, 2238, 2237, 2239, 2273, 2251.
