Lisa Young, Shaw Lyons, Eric Graham and Anthony Houser. ‘W Awarded Grant BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-As students arrive on cam- pus for the first day of classes Tuesday, Gardner-Webb College announced today the award of a $3000 grant to the college to aid in tutoring minority and han- dicapped students. The grant was awarded to Gardner-Webb by the ‘Southern Education Foundation head- quartered at Atlanta. “This grant will further ad- vance our efforts to enhance the educational opportunities we can offer to our students. We are pleased the Foundation has ex- pressed such confidence in our past success,” said Gardner- Webb president Craven Williams. The grant will be used to pro- vide tutors to students whose testing scores or class grades in- dicate a need for further in- dividual instruction in any col lege coursework. The college: also offers a developmental studies program, established in 1977, to work with marginal students exclusively in writing, reading, and mathmatics. According to Williams the tutorial program is part of a broader effort at the college to aid such ® students. “Gardner- Webb believes that one of its special missions is to assist those who have not had the advan- tages of others in society,” he said. Williams said that special workshops and seminars are planned for minority students to develope self-confidence and per- sonal esteem. In addition the col- Fall Arts, Craft Show Scheduled Cleveland County’s Fall Arts and Crafts Show has been scheduled for Saturday, October 27 from 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday, October 28, from 1 to 5 PM, at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. The event co-sponsored by the Cleveland County Fair Associa- tion and Cleveland Technical College will include craftsmen from Cleveland County and sur- rounding areas. The purpose of the arts and craft show is to interest the many talented people in the county to bring their art and craft items for exhibit and sale. Items will include all types of needlework, jewelry, macrame, ceramics, dollmaking, painting, plasticrafts, leathercrafts, china and tole painting, candlewicking, basketweaving, pottery, fur- niture making, picture framing, candymaking . and cake decorating. Craftsmen will demonstrate their works during the show. Joe Goforth, Manager of the Cleveland County Fai, and Ada Blakenship, Cleveland Tech’s Show Coordinator, are in charge of the arts and crafts show ar- rangements. Gardner-Webb was the first predominately white college in the state to accept the applica- tion of a black student, and dur- ing the 1983-84 academic year 10.4 percent of the student body are black. * impaired The college was also among the first in the nation to make its entire educational program available to deaf and hearing- students, and has restructed its campus to ac- comodate students who are blind, or who have other visual or ambulatory handicaps. BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.--Charlotte broadcaster Doug Mayes and Rep. James Broyhill are amoung the speakers scheduled for the ‘Senior Citizens’ Fall Jubilee at Gardner-Webb College on Sept. 18. The program, which will in- clude a display of handicrafts and hobbies, is open to all per- sons 60 years or older, and to members of their families. Cleveland County’s Council on Aging is co-sponsoring the event along with area churches and Gardner-Webb. Thursday. August 30, 1984 KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3C Fall Jubilee At G-W Mayes, host of the Charlotte television program ‘Mid-Day With Mayes” and a news an- chorman in that city for 24 years, will deliver the afternoon address, “‘Maturity-The Winning Difference.” Broyhill will speak that morning on “America’s Future for its Senior Citizens.” All events will be held at the college’s Lutz-Yelton Convoca- tion Center and Kathleen Dover Theatre between 9 am. and 3 p.m. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. they day of the program and will be $5 per person.
