November 21, 1984 Western Is Accepting Scholarship Applications CULLOWHEE-Western Carolina University is accepting applications for academic scholarships from high school seniors wiio rank in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Awards ranging from $500 to $1,000 are available in the academic scholarships competi- tion for the 1985-86 academic year. The awards recognize ex- ceptional academic achievement in secondary schools. ‘Although the awards are for one year only, they may be renewed after the initial year on the basis of scholastic achieve- ment. Scholarships involved in the competition include the Patrons of Quality awards, Western Alumni scholar awards and the Mary Woods Flintom awards. Applicants must have com- pleted not less than 15 academic units including four years of English, ‘three ‘years of mathematics (including algebra and geometry), two years of social sciences or history, two years of natural and/6r physical sciences and two years of a foreign language or humanities (art, music, philosophy, etc.). To be considered in the com- petition, students must complete applications for the competition and admission to WCU prior to Feb. 1, 1985. BB&T Book Features North Carolina People Four hundred years of North Carolina’s special people and places are featured in a new book released today by BB&T. The book, North Carolina: Reflections of 400 Years, was commissioned by BB&T in honor of the state’s 400th an- niversary celebration. BB&T will present a copy of the book to all primary and secondary schools in the state with an eighth grade and to all public libraries and college libraries. North Carolina history is taught at the eighth grade level as authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly. A special segment of the book . details the state’s 400 year past in a unique timeline format highlighting significant - people: and events in North Carolina in words and pictures. The beok features over 250 color and black and white photographs of some of the state’s most pictures- que landscapes and thought pro- voking essays by leaders in agriculture, sports, politics, business and the arts. “The 176-page book includes the work of nearly 35 con- tributors, including such North Carolina notables as Hugh Mor- ton, president of Grandfather Mountain; Doris Betts, noted novelist; Gaylord Perry, ex big leaguer; North Carolina’s poet laureate Sam Ragan and Winston-Salem State head basketball coach, Clarence “Big House” Gaines. Referring to the book as the bank’s contribution to the 400th anniversary celebration, BB&T President L. Vincent Lowe, ‘Jr. noted in his introduction to the volume: “Because of our unique status as North Carolina’s oldest bank, BB&T shares in the keen awareness of our heritage as the home of the first English settle- ment in the New World.” In addition to presenting near- ly 4,000 copies of the book to the state’s schools and libraries, the book is available for purchase at any of the 153 branch offices in 88 cities across the state. Pur- chase price is $37.50 plus tax. As an official project of the North Carolina Museum of History Associates, part of the proceeds from public sales will be used for renovation of the History Museum’s new quarters in the old Museum of Art “ building near the state Capitol in Raleigh.
