Page 4C-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Monday, December 24, 1984 Fifth Graders Share Concerns With Santa (ED. NOTE: Mrs. Jackie Hope's fifth grade class at West School gave a new twist to Santa Claus letters this year. Mrs. Hope broke her class into three groups and asked her students to think of other people's con- cerns rather than writing the usual “want list”. Group I discussed an international problem, a state problem and their own needs; Group II discussed a national in- terest, a local interest and their own wishes; Group III wrote about their family and some items they wish to receive. “We really got in- volved in this project and feel it was beneficial in help- ing us realize that our wants are small compared to other people and places,” Mrs. Hope said.) GROUP I Dear Santa, We have an international pro- blem I am concerned about. The problem that worries me is about the people in Ethiopia. The Ethiopians give them the food that them United States is sending to them. Please let our government and the Ethiopian government get along, so the problem will be worked out quickly. Another problem I hope you can solve is in our state. The . people of Kings Mtn. get their water from John Henry Moss Lake. Sometimes this water turns over. That means it does not taste good. Please help return the water in Kings Mountain back to normal. This Christmas I want a new watch. The battery in my old one runs out this month. I also want a tv. in my room, so I can watch it at ‘night, a new doll for my collec- tion would be nice if you could afford it. Gail Dear Santa, 1 would like for you to help save the lives of seals, whales, foxes, wolves, and all other kinds of wildlife. I want you'to' =’ make stronger laws, so the peo- ple won’t kill any more animals. 1 believe anyone that kills animals should be put in jail. I want you to send presents to the needy children in the U.S. Please send them food. If possi- ble please get people to give money to the needy people, because I feel sorry for them. I would hate to be a needy child. I know it must feel awful. I want a hamster. I think hamsters are very cute and cud- dly. I also would like a jam box with blank tapes and the records “Cool It Down” and “I Feel For You” by Chaka Kahan. I want a new Atari with the Donkey Kong and. Frogger cartridges. 1 want black pants with zippers in them and a cordless phone that runs on batteries. Holly Dear Santa, 1 would like to help the peo- ple of Ethiopia. Could you help the people of the world raise funds for those who are starv- ing? Also, help the citizens of other countries who need food and clothes. Please help the peopl that drink. Help our community build more drug centers to treat those who drink. Help our legislature pass stronger drink- ing laws. One of the things 1 want for Christmas is a portable TV, so I can watch TV in my room. I also want a ten speed bike because my old one is wrecked. It would be nice to get some go- bots to play with and some more Atari cartridges. A remote control car would be super. I want a big pack of ar- my men, so my friends and I could play war. Kirk Dear Santa, I’m hoping that you’ll solve our international problem about Ethiopia. They are suf- fering from a food famine. They aren’t even receiving the food that the U.S. sends over there. Please help solve this pro- blem. I'm also hoping that you'll solve our state problem concer- ning drunk drivers. I wish that you could make stricter laws. I’m wishing that you would bring me a color tv because I like to watch t.v., a Barbie doll, because I love to play with dolls, a Computer would be nice to help me in school, a Cin- di Lauper album, because I love to listen to music and some clothes, because I like to look nice. Merry Christmas! Elena Dear Santa, I wish that something could be done about Germany. In- stead of the East and West. I wish it was just one city. The wall separates families and friends. All kinds of riots break out and people get killed trying to be free. I also wish that stricter laws were passed about drinking and driving. When people drink and drive, innocent people get kill- ed. For myself 1 only want a Deception Communicator with all of his tapes. Dathan Dear Santa, I wish that people cared enough to give money to help the people in Ethiopia who need more food. I wish the peo- ple of the whole world would have a bike-athon and other events to raise money. I also wish we could raise more money to help needy families buy food, clothes, and other items. We could raise the money by having some yard sales, and by cutting grass. For Christmas I want some clothes, so I will look nice. I want some shoes to wear to school. Last, but not least, I want some toys to play with. Susan Dear Santa," 1 wish that people cared enough to give money to help the people in Ethiopia who need more food. For Christmas I want some clothes, so I will look nice. I want some shoes to wear to school. Last, but not least, I want some toys to play with. Susan Dear Santa, I would like to help the peo- ple in Mexico City, because their houses burnted when a gas line burst. They also need food or they will starve. 1 would like for you to help prevent fires that should not happen in the first place. Fires are dangerous and many peo- ple get killed fires. Fires also destroy our forest. I would like a 4-10 shotgun for Christmas, so when my dad goes hunting I can go also. Matthew Lee Stout Dear Santa, I would like for you to help the people in Ethiopia. I am concerned about them. Those people are starving. Please try to give them food and water. Try to give the drunk drivers strength enough not to drink. Maybe you could a place for them. I don’t like to see them drink and drive. I hope I get a computer, a Sheena Easton album, a pair of boots, and some clothes. Jill Dear Santa, I would like you to help the people in Mexico City, because of the, fire which burned most of their homes. I want you to give them some materials to reubild their homes and send some trained workers to help. I wish that more-laws could be passed to stop drunk drivers. I believe more people would be living if the drunk drivers could be stopped. I would like some ear- phones so I can walk around and listen to the radio while I play. Mike Dear Santa, I would like for you to help the people in Ethiopia because they need food to live. I would like you to give them seeds to grow their own food and to teach them how to grow the food. . I wish you could stop peo- ple from having cancer, so no one will die from it. Maybe you could find a cure for it. I want a color TV and a VCR because I could watch movies. Jonathan GROUP II Dear Santa, I would like to stop the pollution that is happening in the U.S. It is messing up our air and water. When I grow up and have children, I want them to have a clean place to live and be able to breathe clean, fresh air. 1 would like you to give my family some money. We need money to pay bills and to buy things. We also need money, SO we can go on vacation together. I want a sling to go on my could get people to drive the drunk drivers home safely. I Turn To Page 8-C Dear Santa, I would like for you to help drunk driveres. 1 wish you 22 rifle so my arms won't get tired while I’m in the woods.
